4020 gas starting slow

Although starter spins over fairly quickly it takes several seconds to start engine. It has a MS carb and maybe the fuel is leaking down. How it this checked and what specifically does one look for?

Have you tuned it up recently? Maybe its not the gas. Check your plug wires make sure they have metal core not carbon fiber. The later gives to much resistance.

There is a lot of places to start without knowing much to go on. Check the ignition system. Check plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, points, condensor, and flyweights. Check valve lash adjustment. When it is running check timing with a timing light. Check fuel, check fuel pump, check for fuel pumping to the carburetor. Check carb, Loosen inlet fitting and see if it has a screen if it does check it for debris. Check the choke linkage for adjustment and operation. You might have to rebuild the carb, check adjustments on carb, Check for side play on carb linkage for possible air leaks. Check intake air supply, Check filter or oil bath air cleaner. Just a process of elimination. Some tractors don't start right up in cold weather either.

Rocking the steering wheel back and forth while cranking sometimes helps. That doesn't let the hydrauic pump start to build pressure.
