4020 3rd hydraulic

I have a 1966 4020 that I wish to add a 158 loader to. The loader has a grapple. I would like to have a third hydraulic outlet. The solenoid option from JD is about $1200. Would tapping into the existing lines be a viable option? I have another SCV from a wreck.

Not enough room to stack on a 3rd SCV. Why not buy a Greesen valve and plumb it into the line coming back to the transmision case on the right side ? Or better yet use the 2 spool Greesen valve to operate the 2 loader functions and use one of your rear outlets for the grapple operation.

What msb refers to is taking off the elbow fitting in front of the brake pedals, and replacing it with a 'T'. Run your extra valve(s) from that, and run the return line into the filter cover. Can buy one or braze a pipe fitting to it.

The tractor has power-shift. Are you suggesting having the return line tap in where one of the two filter housings protrude from the left side of the transmission. Isn't the bolt that holds on the housing an issue. Does the manufactured part you refer to address this? What is the part called? Who makes it? I do like the tapping in idea. Thanks for your insight.

The most economical approach would be installing a single spool control valve for the grapple and using the factory SCVs for the loader but like msb mentioned installing a multi-spool control valve would be the best................

We have a 3020 and 4020 that each have a loader and grapple fork..........we use the factory SCVs for the loader and an aftermarket control valve for the grapple..........If I was doing it over I'd have installed a 3 spool control valve for the loader and grapple fork functions and left the factory SCV/break-aways available for aux. functions..........definitely more expensive, but more convenient!

I would think you should be able to round-up an after market 3 spool directional control valve(closed center) for far less than $1200.00??

As msb suggest Gresen, I believe they are owned by Parker now though..............

Your dealer is a crook or dull witted.Maybe both?
As previously stated by jsm & msb you need to install a dedicated dual spool valve to run the loader & bucket. Supplied direct from the high pressure line and returned directly to the hydraulic pump filter cover. And run the grapple from the rear scv.
Cost to plumb the loader properly shouldn't cost 1/2 of $1200.
If you connect the loader direct and correct you will always be glad you did. Using scv's to run a loader is a slow & mickey mouse system.
Running the return line direct to the filter cover will prevent front high pressure pump starvation. In particular when the clutch pedal is pushed. Your pump will thank you.

Don't overlook the possibility of getting an aftermarket joystick control to opperate your loader. I personally think it makes loader operation a lot easier. Your Deere dealer can quote you a deere joystick control with the valves but hold on to your shorts. A lot of Deere dealers do have the option of going aftermarket through John Day Company or if you are desperate A&I.

The tractor is a powershift. Which hydraulic filter cover is correct?
Also, do you mean the return line should join with a "T" the (1/2")
line above slightly to the right of the filter or do you mean the
smaller line in the same proximity to the other filter cover.

Is the line to supply the spool valves the (1/2?) line just behind
the brake pedal assembly that joins the transmission at a 90
degree fitting?

The loader should be supplied direct from the high pressure line running from the front pump back to the rockshaft/scv remotes.
The return line goes into a filter cover with a threaded boss.
Make certain you return the loader oil to the hydraulic filter not the PS filter.
Loader operaters using equipment supplied from the scv"s.Spend a lot of time with the clutch pushed or trans in neutral waiting for the loader to lift.
The info is all in the JD site"s part section. The ported filter cover shows up listed for the following equipment.
