I just purchased a brand new 5103 John Deere Tractor, 512 Front End Loader, John Deere 48 Backhoe. I am having problems with the back hoe. Outriggers are put down and are not holding. They leak down in less than 10 Minutes. The boom also leaks down. I have sent it back to the local John Deere Dealer I purchased it from. The mechanic they have says this is normal for it to do that. I am not a tractor mechanic but I have been around hydraulics enough to know this is not normal. The backhoe doesn't seem to have the power that is advertised for this model. If I'm not using the backhoe, I have to put the safety pins in the backhoe boom. If I don't the backhoe leaks down and drags on the ground while the tractor is running. The tractor mechanic told me he has never put a backhoe like this on a tractor before. I feel he is not really sure of how to correct the problem and is just trying to brush me off. I want to know if this is normal. As I am digging a whole I have to stop every 7 - 10 minutes to reset my outriggers. Please just tell me what I need to do. The mechanic doesn't seem to want to be bothered.Leaks down as tractor is running also.

i would force the dealer to call in a factor rep and make them replace the machine. there is no call for this on a new piece of equiptment. chance are that there is a casting crack in the control values and its letting fluid pass through. it will only get worse with time as the pressure wears away at the crack. stick to your guns and just give them one heck of a fit. i have an old machine and its a pain to have to tie up my boon everytime i get throguh with it because the jd dealer want take the time to fixz it properly. i've paid him 6000.00 dollars over five years to fix it and it still want make his guys do the work because it hard to get to. i have a part off of and old machine tht will bolt right on and if i ever find a good mechanic i will let him fix it for me no matter what it cost up to a poiot. its and old machine and i'm old to so we get along ok but for a new machine not to be right just isn't cutting it in my book.

Do you have to lower both cylinders constantly or just one? If it is both I would agree that you have a problem with a relief valve. If it is only one cylinder that leaks down it could be the spool valve for that cylinder or it could be the cylinder itself.

There is an easy way to check cylinders....

1.Raise the machine all the way with the outriggers
2. Place a jack under the machine.
3. remove both lines from the cylinder.
4. cap both ends of the cylinder
5. Remove the jack

If the cylinder leaks down you have found the problem. If not you will have to look farther into your valve situation. If you can give more diagnosis we can certainly give you more advise to get you closer to the origin.

Somehow I missed the part about the boom leaking down.... That makes two flops for me today!

You need to have a chat with a JD service dept. that knows whats up. Seems like you have a relief valve problem. As bad as it sounds you should be able to find it by heat. Do you get a squeal when you operate normally? If so follow the squeal to your problem.

definitely, totally not normal.if this is all brand new equipment,i would hound the dealer until he straightens this out.it sounds like either the load check valves or curcuit releif valves are leaking.it could also be internal seals leaking in cylinder.the backhoe should not drift down even from setting over a week
