I see there is a 70 "stander" for sale in the photo ads! Anyone ever hear of a "stander"? Obviously it should say "Standard"! Made me laugh when I read that. "stander on end!" |

Ron, I hope I don't open a big can of worms here, but I think it's just regional dialect. Usually from Northern Minnesota, Dakota's or Canada. I've seen many ads on this site for "standers". I think the term came from early "standards" that had low seats. You had to stand to see certain maneuvers. It's no different from some of the terms that come from the southern part of this great country. I can't tell what's being sold or talked about, until I see a picture, and then figure out, OH yea, that's a ..... Not what we call it here !!!!

Loren, The tractor shown with that caption is a 70 Standard. Having grown up in North Dakota, I was around big standard tractors a lot (they were the norm there) and never before had heard the term "stander". I understand why it may have been used on some models which had a low seat placement which would make it necessary to stand up on them to see (in some cases) where you were headed. But the JD 70 Standard was definitely not in the low seat category. It's another of those interesting things we find out by participating in these discussions. Thanks.

Ron Exactly. You learn a lot of new terms in these discussions. But I have seen other "standers" for sale on this site. Mostly from Canada. Did you see the picture post from Australia a while back, and what they call a combine? Where are in MN? Loren

Should add one more thing. I used to haul soybean meal from Honeymead in Mankato, Mn to a dairy farmer in north central North Dakota. Load in the afternoon, drive most of the night, catch a few hours sleep in the sleeper. They would wake me in the morning for breakfast with the family before unloading. We disussed frequently the difference in terms used for different implements/machinery. And the use of standard there and row-crops in So. MN. And we're not that far apart. -- Loren

There was a tractor advertised for sale around here recently, without a seat or steering wheel. For the man that had lost his a$$ and didn't know where he was going.

I had a John Deere H "Stander" once. I was going up a hill and the clutch popped out. I popped it back in as quick as it popped out. She promptly stood straight up and let me down on the ground. Sure is an odd feeling standing there looking strait up the hood! Seems like it stood there forever and I was froze in place. I don't know what kept it from coming back over(luck, just not my time), but the differential simply turned the tractor around sideways and let the front end down and I stepped back up on the tractor and rode it back down the hill. Not the best John Deere tractor experience for a young man, but definately a lesson learned.
