I broke down and finally bought a winpower pto 20k generator. Bought it from a retired turkey farmer that assured me it worked fine. He said it's been inside it's whole life and I believe him. He also said it worked fine the last time he used it 2-3that years ago. Got it home, hooked it up, ran it up topto speed (540 like it says on the tag) and all I can get is 4 volts out of the 110 plug. Could something have went wrong sitting there? Am I doing something wrong? Is it going to be an expensive fix? Should I confront this guy? |

| If it hasn't been used in quite awhile it might need the field flashed. Mine quit working and it was the mice had chewed a wire off, I called Winpower for a manual and they sent me one free of charge. Shows how to flash the field. I see now you can google Winpower on the internet and get all the information you'll need. |

| Probably a very simple fix to something caused by a little corrosion. I bought a PTO gen and it didn't work either. Took to our local shop and all it took was a little adjustment. $35.00 later I'm good to go. |

| I would bet that you have a bad connection. The breaker that feeds those outlets can go bad also, we changed the one in ours a couple years ago. If you bought it from someone you trust and it worked that recently then there is likely something simple. I could be wrong here so do not take it as gospel but I believe there is a procedure to flash the field on these. Again maybe someone with more generator experience will weigh in and confirm or dispell this. |

| I wouldn't say I completely trust him, he just doesn't have any reason to lie. I bought it off craigslist fairly close to my house and he runs a successful business dealing with people in the area. Don't think he'd want to soil his name. I'll make some calls tomorrow and get someone to look at it. |

| | Even if it was meant for 1000 it would register more than 4 volts at half speed. Which is what you would have had it. Bet there is a rusty or corroded connection or part somewhere from setting for a while. Gary |

| | First make sure it is not your meter that is bad or set wrong. Did you try plugging in a drill or something? Gary

| Sure did. Tried my grinder. Just hummed a little. The gague on the generator didn't read much either. Is it possible this runs on 1000 even though it says 540 on it? It didn't have a shaft on it so I through on a 540 assuming that was it. |

| Did you over speed it a little to see if that made a difference? I would hope that if it is 1000 RPM it would have a fine splined shaft on it. My 540 PRM unit has the standard 6 spline shaft. I believe the armature turns 1800 regardless. |
