i sub soiled one of my garden patches one year. it turned out to be a wet spring. my old neighbor farmer told me sub soiling can be good and bad, if its a dry year it will help you retain more of the water that does fall on your field. but if it turns out to be a wet year your field will stay wet, as it appears the water just pumps up to the top of the ground and keeps the field wet for a longer period of time. all i know is that the next spring was very wet, as i stood in my garden spot up to my shoe tops in mud, my neighbor was across the field just discing along fine, with some dust flying. it was forever before i could plant my corn.
