littleschnebs 11-10-2012 17:27:46 166.181.3.52 Report to Moderator	hi, we have a john deere 1710A disk chisel that bounces at times. we have tried to adjust it so it doesnt but it still does. is this the nature of these or is there a fix? thanks [Reply]   [No Email]

Some mfgs, had optional brackets that you could put tractor front weights on and some like Landoll, put concrete in their tubular frames. Also listen to JD sellers advice. Loren, the Acg. rod in nebraska 11-11-2012 11:12:10 174.39.129.143 Report to Moderator	Re: john deere 1710A disk chisel bouncing in reply to littleschnebs, 11-10-2012 17:27:46   a friend had a 18 chisel plow, pulled it with a 4 wheel drive case, there was times it would bounce going across the field, i took some gauge wheels off some plows and mounted them on the chisel on the outside frame and adjusted them for the right depth, stopped the chisel from the ends from digging to deep, it really helped, rod [Reply]  [No Email]

If it has the single tires on it for the lift it will hop in hard ground. The side walls of the tires are deflecting and causing the bouncing effect. Going slower or running a tire with more plys and higher air pressure will help. [Reply]  [No Email]

If it is the shanks than you are either too deep for the machine, ground hard, or running too fast for the conditions. Remember these machine where designed when we where chiseling at 4-5 mph. Now we have bigger MFWD tractors so we are running at 6-7 mph. Watch and see if all the shanks are flexing at the same time. I have seen this make them just about hop out of the ground. IF it is the standard springs then check and make sure there are not any broken ones. They also loose their strength. You may need to replace them. Is this machine new to you??? Is this the first year you have used it or is this just the first time you have had the problem?? The reason I am asking is that the ground is dryer and harder this fall than normal. I am running a gear lower on my JD 4960 than we normally do. I also have noticed that the shovels are wearing faster. The ground is like concrete in places. [Reply]  [No Email]

The type of ground definitly makes a difference. This morning it was pulling like a dream at 6.5 mph. On the other side of the hill it was bouncing like no other at 3.5 mph. My boss has a 712 or 714 that has 9 shanks and it NEVER bounces. I wonder what the difference is? I"m not doubting that we pull it too fast like you said it"s not designed to be pulled over 5 mph. I know that is definitly the problem sometimes. But other times we have to go 3 mph so it doesn"t bounce at all. We have tried to level it, but maybe we didn"t do it right? Usually on a chisel plow you will set it about an inch higher in the front. The draft action of the chisel will rock it forward just a little when you pull it. I am willing to bet that it is the shank springs that are causing the bounce. The 712 and 714 have a heavier spring setup on them. If you can find a set of depth wheels off another chisel then you may try them. The 1710A maybe sucking in too far and then bouncing when it comes back to the set depth. [Reply]  [No Email]
