As for setting outside the worst will be if it has fertilizer boxes and next will be if it is setting in the ground and last thing on that to think about is the seed boces if they were left uncovered and full of dirt-leaves. As for the depth control they are all talking about the 7000 being better is if you do not properly prepary and level your ground and a 7000 if plate uses exactly the same seed boxes in the meetering parts as every planter from the 246,446,290,490, 494, 12XX series. The reason the 7000 took over was the first good plateless setup and most will be plateless whereeverything older than the 12XX series will be plate ans most of the 12XX series are plate type. And I do not want a planter that I would need a lader to check seed boxes even setting on the ground. And the older planters pull easier, you will never see a 7000 puled with less than 70 horse but 30 horse will handle that 694AN. [Reply]  [No Email]

If you have to plant through a low spot, with a planter with press wheel gauging, as you crest the low spot the corn gets planted deeper then as you get to the bottom the corn is planted shallower. Also a shoe type planter is a PIA to get to work is some conditions. Such as heavy grass sod. Even plowed there are still chunks of sod that will drag in front of the runner and then you have your corn planted into a ditch. As for seed box height. I just went and measured a JD 7000 set on the ground. Plus I have a 494 that I used to plant sweet corn with. So I measures it on the ground. The 7000 is taller. A whole three inches to the top of the seed corn boxes!!!!!! As for pulling harder. The guys where just using bigger tractors as they had them . I pulled a JD 7000 6 x 30 planter for years with a JD 2020. I never had any problems pulling it even full of fertilizer. So I guess you just don't like to have a good stand and more uniform emergence. You try to get 200 corn with an old 494/694 and you will have a hard time getting a good enough job done unless you have perfect weather and soil conditions. [Reply]  [No Email]

Are you a dwarf or what? If everyone tilled the ground enough to make a 694 work fuel bills and erosion would skyrocket, I started with a 494A,I have no interest in going back to plates, a 7000 is a big step up. Ask your local jd dealer about seed box floor plates(which are usually worn out) bevel gears, seed knock offs ect and they probably won't have a clue what you are talking about as the parts man is probably younger than the planter. Kow Farmer $7 dollar corn is worth a good planter. If you don't want to spend what a 7000 will cost then go with an 800 IH or a 5100 White, they can probably be bought cheaper. [Reply]  [No Email]

The 94 series are a shoe type planter usually. If you plow everything they will work fairly good. In heavy sod they will drag even then. There is a reason that just about every modern planter is a double disk type. Also the depth control at the press wheel is a poor designed compared to gauging the depth right at the planting unit. As for Leroy stating he does not like the JD 7000 planter. Well that planter took over 75% of the total planter market before Kinze launched theirs and cut into the total. Way better than a 494. Why do you think Kinze copied them? If it has sat outside, consider it the same as a combine that isn't shedded. The JD unit is self standing where something like a cyclo was not. Eventually JD screwed over Kinze and cut off the supply. Big hoopola in court and Kinze was able to build their copy. Deere screwed themselves out of selling all those units and it's funny to see someone actually copy a deere since all deere does is copy everyone elses inventions. [Reply]  [No Email]

Had our units tested last year. precision units. The best one planted 999 out of 1000 and the worst one was 995 out of 1000. That was at 5 mph. simulated. Also will have a hard time finding corn graded good enough for plate planters. Depth control and seed bounce is another thing to think about. [Reply]  [No Email]
