I have a finishing mower and a brush cutter that do not have a drain for the gear oil, as far as I can tell. Is a guy supposed to just make sure it is filled to where it is supposed to be or is he supposed to put a tube in there and suction all that old stuff out of there from time to time?

I just got an old manure spreader and drained the gear oil out of it and it looked like mud; almost the same consistency. I would hate to have that stuff in my gearbox on my brush cutter and mower and never drain it out of there. Anyone know why there is no drain on those gearboxes?

Thanks.

.

Thanks, BCnT,

I was under the impression that it came only in bulk quantities, Now I just need to go to a JD dealer that caters to farm equipment, rather than the landscaper and homeowner market.

some gearboxes with a bottom cover plate will drain if you remove one of the cover bolts.

Can one get this corn head grease in small quantities like a quart or gallon?

If i have to get it in 5 gallon pails, I wouldn't live long enough to use it all!

You really should run the gearbox long enough to warm it up and get as much dirt in suspension as you can, before you attempt to empty it..
Maybe even Flush it out before you re-fill it..

Lift one end with a jack or Loader, to drain the gearbox..??

If gear oil in old gear box has not been changed it a long while.

i would suck the old oil out of the gearbox and refill the gearbox with:

john deere or case IH cornhead grease, it's almost like gear oil but a far better lube.

You are supposed to buy new gearboxes as necessary!
Inside storage makes lot of difference.
I have taken a loader and lifted/tipped mowers so as to drain the gear box out a cover, or fill hole. Water is the worst cuplret, and a suction gun won't likely reach it.
