I would take a Vermeer 605F over a JD 510 BUT if I had a choice of a later model of any brand that was open throat with hyd tension I'd take the latter. JD 510's were JD second attempt to build rd hay balers. JD 530's are light years ahead of a 510.

| Jim has nailed this one. Both balers will bale hay but the auctions ar full of the JD510 balers that do not sell for $1000. The Vermeer actually could be older than the JD510 but is likely worth $500-1000 more in this situation. Check the condition of the belts. A new set of belts is worth as much as the baler.
