I have a John Deere 336 Baler. A couple of brothers who have grown up as farmers but have since moved on to other careers are using it to bale some straw. I wouldn't trust too many people with it, but I am confident these guys will be very careful and respect the equipment.

I have no idea what to charge them for using the baler. Any thoughts?

Also, if you bale for someone, how much do you charge to use your equipment and bale their hay?

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for all the responses. I appreciate it. Looks like I'm going with 25 cents a bale. They come and get the baler and bring it back; they more than fill the twine they use. That's it.

I have to charge them something. If I don't I know I'll have people lined up to use my stuff around here. Like I said I trust these guys to treat it as well as I do. They grew up on a farm around here which means they really understand the value of a good piece of equipment.

I think they are going to make around 300 - 400 bales of straw and plan to sell the stuff for something like $5 a bale. So even with a quarter my way, some fuel for their tractor and twine for the baler; well, they are making money.

Anyway, thanks again for the responses.

What EXACTLY did you rent to these guys?

1. Just the baler? They're providing their own tractor, twine, fuel, wagons?

2. Baler and tractor? They're providing fuel and twine?

3. Baler, tractor, fuel, twine, wagons?

Baler only, and it's returned in good shape, I would chalk it up to being neighborly.

I would help them as a favor, renting or loaning equipment is bad business.

A farmer had a 14T baler (many years ago) that he couldn't fix. He traded it to one of my dealers on a new baler.

After the dealer brought the 14T back to the yard, I looked it over and told him what he had to do to fix it, as we had the same baler back on the farm.

He took the needles to the JD dealer to have them straightened in the press while I worked on the knotters and timing. After we got it tuned up, he rented it to several different farmers to bale straw with. He made out very well renting out that baler for a couple years before someone decided to buy it from him because it worked so well.

I am the same way Rick. Sounds like we are a dying breed. I see 3 pieces of borrowed equipment from my window. I got a few borrowed out too.

Bought a used massey baler years ago and paid for the thing the first week. Used it with no problems for 2 years. Let my neighbor borrow it and it would not tie a bale when it got it back. I just went and bought me a brand new baler and learned my lesson. Y2 things you don"t loan out a hay baler or your chainsaw

I run 2ea 336 balers. I'd say I spend about $200 per year on parts due to use and age. Make about 2,000 bales each per year, so figure 10 cents per bale in use cost. Then you gotta factor in the buy price and any damage above and beyond use like getting a flat tire or crunching it against something. Also, who drives it and how far? Lastly, I seriously baby my balers when running them, but I twisted the drive shaft once because I left damp hay in the bale case and baled new stuff into it. So, the problem is, the money from wear and tear will never pay for a major break down. Good luck with your decision.

Around Northe Central Texas, they charge 1.00 per bale for cut, rake, and bale small square bales. You will have nothing but trouble renting out your baler. When you got to use it for yourself, you will probabley find it has been ruined. I dont lend, lease, or let equipment out of my sight. Period. Simple and it avoids bad feelings and trouble with neighbors. Tom

I wouldn't rent out my baler without me as part of the deal, so can't help you there.

As for baling, a time-tested formula is to bale hay for shares, about 50-50, the land owner get's half the bales, the baling guy gets 1/2 the bales. As fuel & twine costs went up, I've heard it can be more than that for the baler guy, less for the land owner in not quite top quality forages.....
