Air Compressor Tank repair Question:

I have an air compressor (5hp with 33gal tank) have used the compressor for years to repair and work on my old jeep, tractor or whatever needed painting or air.

The last few weeks the air compressor will no longer hold air for days on end as it has for years. Today, I finally found the leak, it's in the bottom of the tank around the water drain.

I think the bottom of the tank has rusted out, I do drain the tank when i think of it, but over the years, guess the water has taken its told.

Do you think the tank bottom can be repaired or should i just look for another replacement tank?

It's a great Air compressor with plenty of CFM's to run paint guns and air tools.

Anyone ever buy a replacement air tank for their compressor?

Thanks for your replys.

i read some of them to mama bear,

after hearing your concerns, she did not want any of the grandkids anywhere around that old air compressor. They are always wanting a bicycle, go-cart, or 4-wheeler tire aired up.

So I will buy a new tank for this one, if its available or buy a new compressor.

Unless your set up with a full repair shop made for doing tanks replace it in the long run you will be glad you did. An air tank can/will go off like a grenade and kill you and any body else close to it

Some industrial supply houses (Grainger, McMaster Carr and Fastenal) can get you a new tank that way you're not buying the same trouble you already have. DO NOT repair if it's over a certain size it's a ASME certified pressure vessel and you have to be certified to weld on a certified vessel just like a boiler. Why? because if you screw up or make a bad decision people can die and more people could get sued.

DO NOT REPAIR IT. I know first hand what an exploding air tank can do. A co-worker nearly lost his leg when an old rusty tank blew. It was like a bomb exploding.

A defective compressed air tank can be catastrophic. Discontinue use immediately. Look for an new tank - don't take the risk. If it's got a leak, it's an indication of impending failure.

Can"t recommend repairing, if it"s leaking in one spot there is another leak about to happen somewhere else.

I"d watch craigslist for a compressor with a bad pump or motor and swap your stuff over.

Might as well Cut the end out and slide a New tank into the old one and hook it up...

Plenty tanks like New are around that had "Oil-Less" compressors that were hardly used..those compressors don't work very long..
