What do people prefer for secondary tillage after moldboard plowing. I need to renovate a 10 acre hayfield and end up with a smooth level seedbed. Disc? field cultivator? Other options?

fall plow and hit it a couple of times with a disc and perhaps a last touch with a spike drag (or hook that to the disc)in the spring never needed more than that around here.

In my clay soil, disks were parked bck in the 1970's and we field cultivate whenever possible.

Here we would plow in fall, field cultivate in spring, and harrow to really smooth it out nice after that.

If you have courser soil than here, a disk is a good option too. If you are plowing now, and hope to plant it this fall, a disk is likely the best option, and hope for some rain to mellow the soil in there somewhere.

Pretty much have to use a disc on it if it was sod. After that I like to drag it with spring tooth harrows and a following with a Brillion Cultimulcher. For a hay/oats/speltz field I roll with it after seeding.

wfbvcf, Disk that 10 acres 4 to 6 times, or more just have the residue cut up quite nicely. Letting the soil dry out in between plowings. Lastly use a 20 ft piece of 90lb R.R. iron and drag the field 2 or 3 different direction to take out any humps or ridges, and fill the low spots in the field.
Later,
John A.

Plow, drag harrow, rain, spring tooth harrow. If it needs leveling, cheap way is with a heavy piece of I-beam steel. Expensive way is with a harley rake.
