I finished replacing some chains on the chopper and I put the hay head back on. I sharpened the knives yesterday and adjusted the shear bar, and took it to the field tonight picking up what the fox 3000 missed a few days ago for straw.

The pick up is hands down better than the Fox head, and so far the gear box seems to work fine. I still gotta try it in a heavy windrow, which I may be able to in 4th crop in a week or so. This chopper is definately a different animal than the Fox. Not to say the Fox is a bad chopper, it's just plumb wore out. Still thinking if I want to bother fixing up the fox once the 892 is in full service, or just send it in for scrap. Hate to scrap it, but hard to justify fixing it up when we have a newer (although not much newer) chopper to run now.

Once the 892 is fully proven out, I get to start replacing sprockets on it. Just about every one on it is worn out because the previous owner couldn't replace any of the chains when they stretched a little. I put new chains on to help get them through a little longer so we can see what it's made of. Some of them look like they're gonna be expensive, but I'll probably cut the teeth off, then bore out a new one to fit and weld it in place on those.

All of the idlers are gonna need replacement too. Never seen one of those worn out before, just bad bearings. First time for everything.

As far as the drain plug on the gearbox, the manual really isn't any help. Someone mentioned they were small, maybe 1/4" plugs. There are 2 of those on the side of the box about 4-5" from the bottom, and then up a little higher is what looks to be a check plug that is a 3/8" NPT thread, and then a 1/2" NPT filler plug on top. The only help I get from the manual, is that it should take 5 quarts. I guess I'll have to pull those small plugs and see how much I get out.

Thats good to know, as some people say those gearboxes were trouble. The oil in it looks a little muddy so I do plan to change it out.

Glad it's working out for you. They are pretty good old choppers if they are kept up. As long as there isn't any water in that gearbox and it's up to the level on oil I don't think it will give you any trouble. I have never had one apart yet.

I think that top plug in the gearbox is the breather/ fill for the gear box should have a breather somewhere on that gearbox. There should be a ¼ pipe plug near the bottom of the gearbox to drain the oil too.
