My JD 894 rake has been giving me problems for the last few years. When I am raking if I get into heavy or slightly damp spots the hay will not kick out the end but ball up ahead of it. Could this be because of the stripper bar being too high or too low/ I have tried lifting or lowering the rake a little but it does not seem to help. Does anyone have the specs on setting the stripper bar? I keep all teeth replaced so that is not the problem. Any suggestions?

Another option would be to raise the towing vehicle's hitch point higher as this would change basket angle

The top hole on the basket tilt should give the rake teeth the most lift.

okay I see where to change the tilt and it is in the top hole now so how much should I lower it? There are 4 holes below the one it is in now.

As was already mentioned the top hole provided the maximum hay lift and forward motion. No choice but to let it down one hole and see if it helps. If still not OK but somewhat better, try a second hole. Otherwise you are stuck doing something else. Believe mine is in the second hole, but haven't used it more five or six years.

Basket tilt can be changed by changing attaching hole in reel suspension at the very frt of linkage close to the frt hitch

I used to own an 896 rake that would do what yours is doing. This series of rakes was designed to be an economy rake. Because of this they do not have bearings in the ends of the tooth bars but only have bushings which get worn. When this happens the tooth bar drags back effectively eliminating any tooth pitch to help grab hay. In heavy or damp hay it will simply ball up and roll over it. The solution is to tighten up the tooth bars or better yet, get a rake with bearings in the ends instead of bushings. Mike

I do notice a lot of play in those and was wondering if it could possibly be a problem. Also I see that the John Deere teeth are made different than the rubber mounted ones that are on it now. They have a coil spring in them

Coil spring teeth are the economy version. Claim is rubber will withstand more abuse from bending when contacting the ground. I'm not convinced. We had spring teeth on a NI rake and never broke one in over twenty years. Rubber might be better when new, but over time the rubber deteriorates and they break much easier than spring steel. Rubber came on the 896A so I've stuck with it rather than buy all new coil spring teeth. Replaced a bunch that had deteriorated so in retospect probably should have converted to the steel ones and had no further worries. Didn't like the cheap aftermarket tines so bought them from JD which were quite a bit more expensive. Believe the later version "A" rakes came with bearings rather than bushings in the bar ends. Can't just simply change from bushings to bearings. Would need to purchase a different bar end. Five bar would require ten, and four bar eight Wouldn't be a cheap upgrade. As was already mentioned I believe you change a pin hole near the front to vary basket pitch. For the few dollars I would purchase the operators manual.

I can change the basket tilt on my 896A which is very similar to your machine. Haven't used in in several years nor have read the operators manual, but seem to remember it discussed this issue and suggested changing the basket tilt.
