John Deere made a one row chooper from 1935 on up. What your talking about sounds like a #8 made in the 1950's. They ran off a flat belt on the back of the blower. The earlier models ran of a flat belt in front of the blower. The first model chopper didnt have a number it was called a ensliage cutter and was made from 35 to 42. The next model was a 64 made from 42 till about 49 or 50. The next model was the 72 made from about 1950 till about 54 or 55. The #8 followed the 72 and was made till about 59 or 60 when the 6 and the 12 came out.

Well we have a 72 which has a wide flat belt that drives the cutter, even had a hay head for it till my grandpa let the hay head go to the scrapper last fall, still have the cutter tho, we also have a number 6 with what i consider to be a kinda rare 2 row head

A two row for a 6 is very rare, other than in sales brochures I have never seen one.We have two 12's with two row corn, hay pickup and six ft. direct cut head.We cut a few loads each year with them for fun.

An Uncle had a model 25 which was a three point hitch one row, I don't think there were many made, he bought it new in the early 60's and used it 25 years until he quit milking.

The 25 is from the early to mid 70's.

I didn't realize it that late, it was a good little machine but his was the only one I ever saw. I guess those type of machines went out with the 30 cow dairies.

I would say it could be either side of 1950. In the late 1950's my dad bought a used JD number 64 that had a 6 inch or so wide flat belt on flat pulleys driving the cutter head, which was a fly-wheel type that had four knives. Used the thing up until about 1968 when he got a used JD number 6 model. It was also a fly-wheel type but with 6 knives , and was driven by a heavy " V " belt that was about 2 inches wide. Still have both of the old things here.
