I have use of about 9 acres but its been real weedy. The owner is willing to pay for the lime and fertilizer. I think that this may be the best way to be able to get rid of the weeds.

I plan to use it next year in a field that has a lot of thistles in it.

Dad and brother looked into it. Said they had to supply a USDA acres map showing where it would be planted to "ensure" no seed harvesting and replanting. Had a few legal forms they would need to fill out PLUS pay $360 a bag. Too much hassle for the few acres we have.

I work for a couple of big farmers on the side, and they planted half in roundup and the other conventional. The roundup earned its keep this year. Getting there second good cutting next week on the roundup stuff and the others they are cutting again to knock down the weeds. For what its worth the dry weather probably didn't help the conventional alfalfa pass up the weeds. I am guessing they are going to try all roundup next year. Just my 2 cents.

Depends on where you live, here in MN you cut alfalfa every 30 days, or it is winter or spring. So you generally can keep up with the weeds pretty good in alfalfa, no need to spray - the very first time after planting can get weedy, after that mowing keeps up with the weeds.

Other locations with a mild winter or longer dormant dry periods I think rup alfalfa can really help out.

I planted it last year its ok but no magic bullet. Sprayed it twice mowed it once never got any useable hay last year. Got first cutting this year, but now i think its dead from drought on light soil. Cost= $350+ a bag.

most - even horse hay best with a lil grass in it -- just seed and after a couple cuttings no weeds
