Well I got my Oliver 770 home and have been tinkering with it. I baled about 400 bales with it yesterday afternoon in thick grass. I like this tractor. The live pto does make baling quite a bit easier. After baling several tens of thousands of bales with a Farmall h over the last decade, I feel a little stupid for having not upgraded to a live pto sooner. I was thinking that this 770 could handle a newer, quicker baler than the 24t I have now. Any recommendations on a square baler that will be quicker/handle more hay-- reliable-- relatively easy to work on? Jd 336 maybe? I'm also going to get a small round baler one of these days-- the goal is to modernize a little and be done sooner. |

And I'm assuming a 50hp tractor will run most of the balers mentioned below--- is that correct?

A 50hp tractor will be more then enough to run any small square baler. Now depending on what tractor your talking about it may not be heavy enough to handle pulling a wagon behind in all conditions. Back years ago I would pull a JD 14T behind my 1950 Oliver 77 with a trailer behind the baler because the baler had a thrower on it and that way I did not have to pick up the bales out of the field. The 77 was heavy enough to handle things well up or down hills

Had NH's for years 68, 273, but then got a 328 JD and liked it so well we got another 328. The JD makes a much nicer bale. Older 328's are available for 2-3K and worth every penney.

Your Oliver 770 is a big step up from an IH "H". As for balers I would look for a New Holland 276 if you want good capacity and lower price. The JD 336 baler is a good one too but they are more money right now. There are more NH square balers to find used parts from. The knotters and needles are used on many common models.

We had a mf 124 bailer from new for many years. Baled many thousands of bales. It had a thrower on it and would bale faster than 2 guys could unload from the wagon. Virtually never missed a bale. Had no major breakdowns that I can remember.

Find a New Holland baler and you will never look at a JD baler again. Years ago I use a JD 14T and used the heck out of it. But I now have a NH271 and would never go back to a 14T or 24T. Easy to work on and does a nice bale and parts are easy to come by. As for that Oliver years ago I use my Oliver 77 to pull the baler and yep hard to beat that independent live PTO
