old IH disk

Trying to replace a broken disk in an old IH harrow;having trouble getting the nut off of the shaft. The whole shaft wants to turn..Need some tips on this project...Thanks

I always put a big pipe wrench on the spacers heat the nut with the torch and turn it .The flanges that lock the nut on should be bent back so nut will turn.

cut/chisel the nut off. Could you put a pipe wrench on one of the spools? Wedge the pipe wrench against solid ground and then try to loosen the nut with a healthy wrench that you can get some leverage on. If the shaft is square and everything turns on it, you'll need to replace a lot of parts.

ihcar166..are you saying the flange should be flush with the disk or should it be bent outward away from the disk

Sink your disk in some plowed ground. Pick the wheels up and there should be enough friction and weight to do the job. Devin

The flange strap is instead of a lock washer and fits in a grove on the end washer to keep it from turning and the ends of that flange strap are bent towards the nut tight against it to lock the nut so it can't turn. When putting back together replace with a lock washer and new nut. I have taken the nuts off using a angle grinder and grinding one side of the nut off and when you get the nut cut through use a big chisel to loosen the remaning part of the nut.

I disagree with most....not all......of the advice you've been given; simplest way is an impact wrench big enough to do the job, if you've got a hex nut or a socket to fit whatever nut you've got. The spacers on all the disks I've ever worked on do not 'fit' the axle and holding a spacer will accomplish nothing (your spacers may indeed 'fit' the axle and holding a spacer would work). A torch is certainly an option if you've got a torch. What we ALWAYS did was to wedge the 'right' size piece of wood between one or more blades and the frame of the disk and use whatever size pipe wrench/with pipe it took to turn the nut off. Disclaimer........when you say 'old' disk, your disk may be older than my experience, you may have a round, rather than a square axle, etc, in which case these other guys may know more about it than me.
