im have seen pictures of a hammer mill being used with an A. Does anyone know if this was made for an A and if so -- id sure like to find one. ive also seen pictures of one behind a cub in some early farmall advertising-- id like to have one or the other. any ideas or comments?

The A has much more power than the Cub, I think it would handle the small mill fine. You can get a flat belt drive for the A.

A few months ago, I found a small McCormick Deering hammer mill (E1 or 1E I think the model was listed as) on the photo section of this website. I made the phone call and bought it. It is the exact same mill that is pictured in one of the books on Farmall tractors and equipment and in that book, is being belt powered by a Cub. Will it work? I don't know yet but hope to have it up and running by the upcoming tractor show season and then we'll see. Anyway, they are out there....somewhere. Just gotta keep looking.

I can't inmagine a cub having the power to operate a hammermill. Perhaps the old photos you viewed showed a cub operating a small corn cracker or small sheller that you fed 1 ear at a time.
Those 2 machines could be operated by a small gas engine and even some had a crank you could turn by hand. Pete

They made hammer mills as small as 6" and that size a Cub would handle OK. Would not be fast but would work for small amounts. The larger the hole in the screen the easier they pull.

We have an old 2 ear corn sheller that we don't use but that seems to have been meant to be operated by the hand crank on the side.
