I went to an auction yesterday. They had a five or six-foot lawn roller that sold for $425.oo and a 3-pt, 8-ft spike tooth harrow that went for $325.00. What makes these things so high? The harrow didn't look like anything special. It was a good sale that went quick. A few bargains where I hesitated too long, but a good time just the same. I did get a log chain that I've been wanting. The one I have is too short for skidding bigger logs. Larry in Michigan. |

| There is an auction every Saturday night about 15 miles from here that will have everything from farm equipment to tools to household nick nacks that should have gone straight to the dump. It's a good people watching experience and I've found some good buys there on tools, but guns and what little equipment they have goes for ridiculous prices. |

| The sales around here are a place to socialize, eat & sometimes make some great buys. It all depends on what is being sold, who is there & how many are there. For the last few years things at spring and fall equipment sales have gone high. Im always surprised what people will pay for used equipment. I often go to sales just to eat & watch and sometimes make a get buy. The only thing I have found I cant buy at a sale are guns but many others do. |

| | Hugh; I try to do auctionslike the casino. There's a limit I will pay/gamble. But, Iusually attend an auction if there's something I'm interested in, like a planter. Usually can't touch it, but sometimes find a bargain. Bought a 2-drawer file cabinet for $1. It's an intersting day--you see the same people at auctions. One guy buys all the copper wire and scrap steel no one wants. I think auctions would be a fun date as long as she brought her own money. Larry in Michigan |

| Way to many people go to sales with absolutely no knowledge of what something is worth, and then get way caught up in the auction experience. Ive actually seen people bid against themselves, raise their own bids. A good and honest auctioneer will stop and explain what's happening, or perhaps not take the bid, and then go on, but not all auctioneers are that way. I'm never surprised, and always amused, when all kinds of livestock supplies and equipment, and acreage implements, bring considerably more than new price, for the exact same item new at the farm store. An auctioneer friend says the only thing he can figure is, "the stuff has to bring more money, it's experienced, and knows it's job"!! |

| | Larry: First rule of thumb, you never go to auctions looking for a bargain on a particular item. You just go looking at bargains. You can usually tell by time auctioneer starts selling where prices are going, size of crowd and how well they are dressed will tell you. Also, never look very prosporus if buying at an auction, folks will tend to run you. |

| I guess it's the competition factor that will make people pay ridiculous prices for stuff in the heat of the moment. There is an auctioneer around here that has a lot of estate, moving, etc... sales and they are all over the place as far as prices. Some stuff will be several times what it is worth and some stuff will be a real bargain. He sells a lot of guns and they always go high. You can buy new guns for less than what they sell well used specimens for. |

| | Was that VanderHydes sale up by Cedar Springs? If so,look at the white fence out front and imagine who his friends are who were at that sale. I wonder if he moved to Versailes Ky? I know he bought a farm down there a few years back. They said his wife didn't want to move down there though. |

| | Odd, I wasn't there it should have went cheap???? I went to several sales last year and got so fustrated to see folks spend $5000 on a $3000 tractor, a grand on a baler that I wouldn't even consider a parts machine, $500 on a rusted out non-functioning rake, and $800 on grain wagons that needs completely rebuilt that I quit going period. Friend of mine go's and buys a $2000 tractor for $600 bucks. Go figure? BTW I buy run 20+ year old equipment, used cars that require repair, and rebuild anything that has any life left in it. So I think I have a fairly good handle on condition. |

| | There is no rhyme or reason to the price many things sell for at auction. Some things people just get really stupid over. Around here one thing folks go nuts over is the 8' Applegate feed troughs all the feed stores sell. You can buy a new one, use it two years so it looks kind of old and sell them at a consighnment sale for $20 more than what you can buy a new one for. I was at a sale last week were some horse drawn stuff went so high the minonites were walking away shake'n their heads. It was an estate sale and it turns out two of the nephews did not like each other and could not settle on some stuff before the sale and were in a pi$$'n contest to see who wanted their uncle's stuff more. They got tired quick and my brother and I ended up with some pretty good buys out of the tool pile. Dave |

| | Same way with hog/cattle panels. I've seen them sell panels cut in half - 8' long - for 16 bucks. I don't go to sales anymore. Ain't got the time to waste. Now if I'm going just to visit with the neighbors - that's different. Paul |
