I got a while back a JD Van Burnt grain drill that is horse drawn for $150. The guy used it a year before to plant a small plot of oats other than that he never really used it for many many years up here in northern Mich. I changed the tougue and removed the metal things for the horse harnesses and pulled it behind my H to plant a small hay field. My question is should I be using it or save it and restore it. It has the wood wheels and wood seed boxes, worried the wood wheels will break or something if keep using. Still can see all the decals/ seed applcation rates and its not missing any parts. Just was wondering if it is a common old grain drill or if there isn't many around now days. I know I should post a pic, I'm in process of gettin a camera.

With the wood wheels it is a very old model and the steel tire on the wood is what would likely come off, if you use it soak the wood of the wheel up real good with water to expand the wood and keep that tire on tight. That drill would be from the 20's or earlier. Come the 30's the Deere drill had steel wheels but a wood box and later steel wheels and a steel box. Yours actually is a show piece because of the wood wheels. Now the steel wheel ones are still a useable drill as more likely to get parts for them, the wood wheel is obsolete as far as any parts.

I had a good one around the farm for many years, it was on steal like the other fellows and I used it occasinally to seed small grain or grass. Sold it last year to an Amish fellow for $225. His plan was to continue to use it. I wouldnt spend any money of them or keep one around unless you somehow value it for your personal use.
