Troubleshooting knotter problems

I have the manual for my baler and will reread that for understanding why my knotter is not working at all.
What I would like know is how you go about determing the source of the problem.
It seems like this is a two person operation, 1 turning over the flywheel slowly while the other person observes the operation of the knotter. Is this how you do it or is there a way to do it with just one person?
When you are making these observations do you have to have hay in the chamber or can it be empty to make the rotation of the flywheel easier?
I have read about parts like the bill hook being worn and not being able to tell much difference between the working and the non working part. Does anyone get a micrometer or other device out to measurethe difference or is by look and feel?
Enough question for now. it would be nice to find the old baler mechanic that could answer those questions.

Don't know what baler you have but in the JD 14T manual theres about 3 or 4 pages of trouble shooting. Balers with knotter problems can be a real pain. I prefer to have 2 people but it can be done by one just takes a lot of leg work

i prefer to do it alone. seems like i can pay more attention to whats going on without some joker looking on that doesn't have a clue. i guess he could turn the flywheel though. i never could learn much from reading. i always had to do hands on thing to understand. sometimes i'd like to mee the guy who invented the knotters on balers in a dark alley and me having the only 2 x 4 around.
