Anyone ever replaced a HE217 with the older HC217 motor? I"m hoping the bell housing will swap out. Anything I should watch out for? Thanks, Brad Bachelor |

According to the book that is right in front of me,the 55 uses the HE217.The 95 uses the HG217.As far as I can tell(from personal observation),the 55 uses an updraft carb, the 95 uses a (2barrel) downdraft and is wound a little tighter.

You dont want to put a motor from a round into a square back. There going to be underpowered for the machine.

My early 95squareback with a 217 will keep right up with my neighbor/buddy's 95 with the 303.According to the book, the difference between 217 and 303 is just THREE horsepower.

What is the rpm of the two engines? A 217 55 wouldn't keep up with a 303.

The rpm of a 303 in a 55 was 1900. The 95 rpm with a 303 was 2500. Horsepower was 72 in a 55 and 90 in the 95 with the 303 engines.

The only difference I can see is the flat belt pulley on the bell housing. Bore, stroke, and horsepower is the same. Valve clearance adjustments are a little different. I'm going to have to swap the bell housings and I'm not sure how big a job that is. Any secrets on the bellhousing?

Sorry,I cant help on that one.Except you you may need to use a large screwdriver to help seperate the halves of the housing.they get hung up on the dowel pins once in a wwile.

Thanks for your help. I'll be a bell housing expert shortly. I just wish I would'nt have to become an expert with money still in the field
