agpilot 09-27-2012 17:54:23 208.83.190.25 Report to Moderator	Hello all: I will be helping a friend get his combine adjusted for his first run on corn.. ( my corn so I will help ) It is a White 8600 and in fairly good shape for how old it is. Shedded most of its years. General advice is welcome and specific advice if anyone has run a White in corn. Same as Oliver I am guessing. It has a 4 row 30inch head on it. First question is a general speed and opening for cylinder in corn? It was run last Summer on oats and did a fairly good job. I have a hand held RPM checker.. This corn is getting fairly dry now and its typical sw-mn yield. Thanks for any & all advice. ag.. [Reply]   [No Email]

If the bits of cob are split length wise, concave is too tight. If broken up crosswise, cylinder speed is too fast. You will want to see maybe 1/2 the cobs or more remain whole. (but this is not scientific, what counts is to get the corn into the grain tank and not leave it on the ground) [Reply]  [No Email]
DeltaRed 09-27-2012 18:29:45 67.6.219.50 Report to Moderator	Re: Need combine Adjustment advice for 1st corn in reply to agpilot, 09-27-2012 17:54:23   On a x5 series JohnDeere...Front of cylinder open 5/8-3/4".Rear of cylinder open 1 1/4 or wide open.Approx 450 in dry corn; up to 600/650 in wet corn.Sieve open 1/3 to 1/2.If cobs are 1/4ed,open cylinder a little.If grain is ground/cracked slow down cylinder.If corn is left on cob,close or de crease speed on cylinder a little.You're going to have to 'play'with it.Glad to help,but you really need to get a book.To much info is needed to just 'wing it'I've owned combines since '80.Still refer to my books on a regular basis. You ALWAYS want the front of the concave open wider than the rear. Always. Otherwise you are doing all your thresing in the front fourth (or less) of the cylinder. Mike [Reply]  [No Email]
