I have only been at the running the combine for two years. I own / operate the combine for my dads small farm. I have been running 2" or so off the ground. I was talking to a guy this past week that said just run it on the ground since I have a flex header. I do have a flex header right?? I do unbolt the cutter bar for beans so I assume this is the flex part. Please advise, should I run it on the ground? Thanks. |

| It"s not a flex header, it is a floating cutterbar- maybe Love, Hart-Carter. Normally run it low enough that on level ground the metal flap that lays behind the sickle, against the header, is running with the top edge just over the bolt heads of the sheet metal on the header. FWIW- attach a rod to the top of the thresher housing, run through a loop bolted to the bottom front of the cab. Paint the upper end of the rod yellow, set the header on the ground until the header bottoms out- attach black tape on the inside of the cab window, lining up with the painted rod. Raise the header until the bar just clears the ground, attach another strip of tape on the window. Then you know the range of header travel when dusty or dark. |

| | Well - certainly. If it's a flex header it floats up & down 4-6 inches. You want the header so you are in the middle of that range, so the skid plats of the knife are rubbing lightly over the ground. Leave too many beans in the field if you don't. --->Paul |
