| I agree with Gary and Moki….mine will stick in 1st gear, even though the shifter moves to 2nd. I have to shift it a few times, and keep it lubed and free to get 2nd gear. Jd-toms suggestion is worth a look for a bit of extra speed as well. Chris |

| Something that may be good to check is the shift linkage on/near the transmission. It fills with chaff and dirt and needs to be cleaned out periodically to make the shift into second gear possible. Just a thought. |

| Look up on the hydro pump where the control cable from the hydro lever in the cab connects with the controller on the hydro pump. It looks like a fork that is straddling a 1/2" x 1" x 3" long block of steel hooked to the hydro control valve. Over time, the fork wears back and the block gets a groove worn in it. If this is the case, take them both off and rebuild them with a welder. I have had them worn enough that you can gain back 1-1.5 mph in second and 2-3 mph in third. |

| | I bet it is in 1st gear and not second. 1st and 3rd are across from each other. The cable has to drop down at the transmission end to get into second. If it doesn't drop down the shift lever will go across like it is in second but you are really in 1st. Check that. Gary |

| I have lots of experience around IH AF's and Gary is correct. You are in 1st gear. Its taken me as many as 10 tries to get one in to 2nd gear. |

| | Hey Gary, I feel like that what you"re talking about it my problem, the pin slides all the way in to go into third, and it is fully out for 1st and 2nd, but I see nothing different between 1st and 2nd anywhere on the linkage, I"m not 100% sure how it functions between 1st and 2nd, but I"m sure what you"re talking about is the issue. Is there any detail you can give me on how to identify it for sure? I think because of the problem is why I don"t see what you"re talking about, which makes sense. My cable isn"t moving on the transmission end which is what you"re getting at I believe. |

Re: 1420 Ground Speed Trouble in reply to IHMANKY, 10-14-2009 08:00:55

| | There are 2 pins with notches in them coming out of the transmission. One pin is for 1st and 3rd. When the cable bushing is in that notch and the pin is in, you are in either 1st or 3rd and when the pin out you are in the other of those two gears. The cable then has to go to the other pin notch to shift to second. Your pattern on your lever is something like this. 1 2 ----- 3 As you see 1st and 3rd line up. when the lever moves across to go into 2nd is when the cable has to drop to the other pin. I use to get my 1440 into second by slamming the lever back and forth through neutral on the dotted line several times before trying to go into 2nd. I would go take pictures but I no longer have the 1440 and the 2366 is different. 2nd and 3rd line up on the 2366. Hope this makes sense to you. Gary |

| Incase Gary doesn't see this and get back to you, I just cleaned up and squirted oil on the linkage and pins on the trans, and kept shifting it through the gears and trying it. Eventually it dropped into 2nd. I leave mine in 2nd when parked now....not sure if that helps though! Chris |

| Thank all of you fellas. I believe I will try soaking her down good with PB or AeroKroil and work it around the shift pattern several times. Most of our acreage is close together and we won't get it up in road gear more than three field changes, so I'll get 'er in second and leave her there as much as possible, as well as leaving it in 2nd when it is sitting. This is a task for tomorrow, still raining and I've got about 70-80 bushels in the tank so better not back out of the shed! |
