Engine quite, mechanic pulled it apart and found rod broken it also took out harmonic balancer when it let go. Crank in good shape as rest of engine from his examination.

Wanted to get it running and put a snow blower on it. It is worth it to do that. Thanks

They call 'em grenade gears for a reason... in reply to sicko, 10-24-2009 14:35:50
Most of the yellow and white garden tractor guys pull those grenade gears first chance they get.. You can get the crank rebalanced if you want, look up Brian Miller on the net for one place that will do it.. but for straight yard use you should be fine with no gears.

Just for kicks try Googling "Kohler performance engines"....lots of neat stuff out there to squeeze a few more ponies out of them. THe K series is one good solid motor.

Here's the invoice when I was rebuilding a B&S 23 engine back in 1993. The prices have probably risen a lot since for the parts & labor.
Total cost was $155.00 and I did the teardown and rebuild. I reused the main old ball bearings since they didn't feel rough. The engine still runs good 15 years later. Hal
PS: This machine shop has been in business for over 75 years and is still in business. Their
shop manager has been there about 45 years. Note the price for a valve job for $10.00 and I don't think that has went up that much.

Wow that is amazing for several reasons. The price is one but the other is that you hung on to that bill for all these years AND you know where to find it. Amazing. Thanks for the info. bill

We shredded 5 big bananna boxes full of cancelled checks, bank statements & my government papers after 43 years and check stubs from work. They announced on TV where & when the shredder truck was going to be. It was amazing how fast that thing shredded all that paper. What we shred at home I put it on the garden for mulch. Hal
PS: Somethings you just hang on to.

I did the old K 12hp in my Wheel Horse 5 years ago. Total cost with boring the block, having the valves done, new rod and piston was a little over 250 with me doing the tear down and putting it back together. I mow about 5 acres a week for half the year, plow and cultivate a garden and used it 4 years blowing snow on a farm drive in Mn. Still runs great! Yea the old Kohlers are worth rebuilding. Took the deck off yesterday and put the blower back on it.

Oldtanker,
Thanks for the encouragement. Did you get a JD snow blower or an after market? What do you recommend and do you run the blower off the pullies underneath or the ones on the side to run the blower? bill

Be sure to carefully examine the camshaft in a kohler motor after a rod has let go as it will also be hit by the broken rod. The result is a hairline crack in the shaft that won't be evident until you put the reassembled motor under load and get a knock after the camshaft fractures. Been there ,done that. Upside is you get more assembly-disassembly practice.

Are the balance gears like appendix. Nice to have but you really don't need it? bill

Turn the crank pin 10 under, buy a 10 under rod. You can also buy the balancer gears from Kohler. Also check the cylinder wear. If the cylinder wear is more than .003 inch the block needs boring.

On the crank if it looks okay should you still turn it? Will do if that is what you suggest, any idea on how much it costs? As I said I'd like to use is as a snow blowing machine still wondering if it is worth fixing. Rest of machine is in great shape. bill

The crank pin can look good and still be out of round. You need to check with a micrometer. I do not remember what is charged around here to turn a single cylinder crank. I just had a KT-17 done. Turned all four bearings to 10 under cost $56.00. It has been a while since I have done a K241 so I do not remember the prices But IMHO ANY K-series Kohler is worth rebuilding.AVERY TOUGH engine if maintained. Not terribly fuel efficient and the clean air people do not like them as the exhaust, being a flathead, is a little dirty but they are a solid engine.

Are you sure the crank is in "good shape" after breaking a rod and the harmonic balancer? Tom

Not being a mechanic I am taking the word of a mechanic. He said he would clean up the crank with emery cloth, he said he looked over all the rest, cylinder, piston both good, would put new rings in it and grind valves. Said the rest of the engine looked really good. I don't know what it will cost to replace rod, grind valves, new rings and buy harmonic balancer? Any thoughts?

He said it looked like when the rob went it just hit the balancer to break it in half but could see no other damage.

Thanks for you time and thoughts. bill
