Hello,
I have a Scotts 1642. The other day after I stopped it during a mow, it would not restart. It now only clicks once each time I turn the key. I bypassed the solenoid with a cable and it turned the engine, so I replaced the solenoid. I now still in the same boat, one click. What the heck else could it be? Battery is fully charged. I also have an issue where bypassing the solenoid will turn the engine but will not start it. I assume this is something else...?
Any help greatly appreciated! :)

ok - so I used a test light. Clamp to negative - connection to solenoid from battery - light. All other connections at the solenoid from the negative battery post - NO light. I tried it with the key in all positions - same thing.

Does that mean the new solenoid is bad?

Do you get a light at the solenoid when you're trying to crank the engine. You need to trace the wire from your starter switch whether it has a push button or a key to the solenoid to see if your light is getting battery voltage. If your lite glows & shows voltage is at the solenoid you probably have a defective solenoid. Hal
PS: If you have safety switches on that tractor
one of them may be defective. It may have one on the neutral start or seat. You can jumper these
to isolate the switches, but I wouldn't operate the tractor with them jumpered.

What's needed is a test light, to see if
current reaches start terminal on solenoid
when key is turned. Another piece of test equipment is a fused jumper, use a low amp fuse.
connect one end to battery, touch Start terminal, if solenoid engages, the unit is good,
switch / wiring bad

Thanks for the replies guys! Some great ideas here!
I"ll try to answer everything I saw up till today here:

First - The click is happening not at the solenoid, but rather somewhere seemingly in the centre of the engine itself. Sounds most like it is near the fuel line/filter. Definitely not at the starter though.

Second - thanks to your responses, you tweaked me to something. The safeties. All seemed ok and disengaged. All connections looked clean. However when the engine was cranking when bypassing the solenoid, I had to have the seat up and didnt push the clutch pedal in. I disconnected the seat safety just to start it and engaged the clutch/brake lock. The missing part of the equation for me was that the key needed to be in the ON position. After that I did manage to start and mow last night, but if I had to stop the mower I had to bypass the solenoid each time to start it again. A ROYAL pain! No way I can get my kid to do the job like that :)

Some ideas left that you guys had that I havent tried/explored yet yet:

1. Possible bad solenoid. Think I should just exchange it and see?

2. Ignition switch - how could I test that? I would put my skill level at this stuff as beginner but not newbe.

Thanks for all your help! :)

When you twist the key or push a starter button you need to see if battery voltage is getting to the solenoid. Use a volt meter and see if voltage is getting to the solenoid when someone else makes an attempt to start the engine. Be careful around that flywheel when doing this. What you're doing is bypassing the starter switch
when making a start. One of those small terminals
on the solenoid is used only for starting. Hal

As far as the click you hear in the fuel line/at carb is probably the fuel shutoff sol one of the other guys mentioned,my 1st thought after your last reply, was a blown fuse in wiring harness, but when you turn ign sw to on & hear click would rule this out, double check where sol bolts to rear of dash/chassis,check that you have a good/clean area(no rust/paint)where sol bracket meets dash/chassis,if sol has a single terminal for coil, take a jumper from battery pos to coil terminal on sol(ign sw off)if sol works & starter cranks eng, nothing wrong with sol,if it doesn't either sol bad or wrong type,to check ign sw you'll need a powered test light or vom meter, you'll probably have to remove plug-on connectors(s) from rear of sw,locate battery terminal on sw,connect 1 lead of light/meter to this terminal, while holding sw in start position goto other terminals with other lead of light/meter,if sw good, you'll get a light/meter reading(ohms)on one of the terminals,if no reading to any other terminals ign sw bad,if sw checks ok,then problem in safety sw's or wiring harness. If you have owners manual check for a wiring diag in it to id ign sw term & wire colors to safety sw's,hopefully there's one to help you along. If your going to check safety sw's with a powered testlight/ohmmeter,disconnect battery pos cable BEFORE doing any testing.

Try tieing down seat & turn ign sw to on/run position when bypassing sol,see if eng fires/runs,you may be grounding ign thru seat sw or ign sw/both,as for starter sol, check for loose safety sw's(clutch/brake,mower engage, parking brake/rev sw)also check for bad contact's/loose connector on all safety sw's plus pto sw(if elect clutch) and ign sw,

A trick I pull is to turn on the lights and try starting the engine. If the lights go out, something is providing insufficient current, (bad cable/ground/switch). Your test says the starter is good.
If you have a volt meter, measure the voltage drop across the starter with the key turned. It should be near 12V.

Ignition switch or wire from solenoid to the ignition switch not letting enough current thru to fully operate the solenoid?

Or a bad ground on the solenoid?

Or the new solenoid you bought is bad?

We have this problem where I work a few times a year. Customer says the tractor wont restart after they ran outta gas.

Is your parking brake on?
Are your blades engaged?

If it is an interlock switch it would not click the solenoid I think.

Agreed, IH2444, it wont click the solenoid. Are we fer sure thats where the click is coming from? Could be the fuel cutoff making the click. The Fuel Solenoid clicks when the key is turned on or off. You can hear that when the tractor isnt running.
