I would like to know who manufactures Sears Craftsman garden tractors and who makes the electric deck lift actuator (p.n. 917.242440)for my 46" 19.5HP Kohler/Craftsman tractor model #
917.250520.
Sears doesn't list any repair parts for the actuator and will only sell the complete unit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Cub Cadet Deck Pulley in reply to Ronnie, 05-23-2002 13:14:21
Ronnie, wish I had written down the info just recently discussed on the IHCC site. ( www.ihcubcadet.com/discuss/ ) You can get a smaller(4 1/2" I THINK) middle drive pulley which then necessitates a slightly shorter drive belt. That will speed it up some. Also a recent discussion on the Gator blades.

Re: mower deck in reply to Jim Il, 05-15-2002 17:20:00
Jim - The rust is forming because you only clean it out once a year. You really need to take the deck off several times over the mowing season and clean out the grass from the underside. That "dried" grass traps moisture up against the underside of the deck, and this is what is causing the rust.

I pull my deck once a month, use a plastic scraper and soapy water to clean it off, followed by hosing down to rinse. Once dry, I then spray slip plate (graphite paint) on the underside, about 3 or 4 coats. That aids in future cleanings -- and it's relatively inexpensive (available at most farm supplies or at your Deere dealer).

The blades should be sharpened more frequently as well. I sharpen mine once a month, when I have the deck off. It does not take much effort and I use a flat file to do this. Using a grinder is o.k. if you don't get things too hot and lose all the temper. You want to follow the same angle and finish the edge so you have about a 1/64" radius. A razor sharp edge will roll over and become dull more quickly. I simply check the balance by hanging the blades by the center hole, on a nail that sticks out horizontally from one of the studs in my garage. I simply set the blade horizontal, and if it does not dip, it's fairly level. If it does dip, that side needs a little more file action.

As far as the 1/2" to 3/4" radius on the trailing edge of your blades, I'd say you got your money's worth out of them. - Dave

Re: Kohler vs. Briggs in reply to Mike Pearl, 04-22-2002 05:24:14
Time has proven that a basic fact is; you buy a Briggs for the price, and you buy a Kohler for the durability That said you can justify the price difference if you want it to last!! MHO only!

I have an 11 hp Craftsman Model 917.254271 Ser # 1677S521162

The right rear tire is flat. How do I get the wheel and tire off? Once the outer lock washer and plain washer is off, I could not remove the wheel. I tried a wheel puller, but nothing is moving. Help"''

I am looking for an owners manual or a picture that would illustrate how to attach a snow blade to a model 917.254240 LT 12HP Electric Start 6-Speed 38" mower lawn tractor. The blade was purchased at the same time as the mower however it has not been used for 9 years. The original installation instructions can not be found and Sears PartsDirect was unable to assist.

I have the manual for the blade. I can scan it if you would like, and as I can see, you needed it five years ago, but the offer is still there.

I am trying to find a manual for my Craftsman lawn tractor. I don't have the model number. Sears was no help with model number. It has a 50" deck, KohlerPro 20 VTwin. If someone can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

I have a 19.5 Sears Lawn Tractor and it is made by American Yard Products and that is where I get my parts. The part you are needing may be sold as a unit only no matter where you get it. You can go to Sears.com and go to PartsPlus, put in your Model # and get a parts break down.Mark

Craftsman, Ranchking, MTD, Cub Cadet, and almost all other makes of garden tractors (with the exeeption of John Deere, Kubota, and a few others) are all made by MTD and carry different names and slight differences in appearance.

As far as the actuator goes, you should have gotten an operator's manual for the unit when you bought it (unless it was sent from the factory that way). Nevertheless, you can try calling Sear Parts @ 1-800-366-7278 and see if you can get a parts list for it.
good luck.

Just a minor point here, if the model number on sears tractor is 917.xxxxxx it was built by AYP - American Yard Products if it is 502.xxxxxx - it was built by Murray, I am not sure that MTD ever built a tractor for Sears but I can check that when I get to my shop. The older tractors were built by Roper which was consumed by AYP. The XXX.prefix on any sears product identifies the "source" or manufacturer, I have a couple of lists that cross-reference most of the OPE brands that Sears sells if anyone needs that information
