There is an ad for a Ford lawn tractor for sale with a cart in our local paper. Price is a whole $50. Now there has to be something wrong with it or it wouldn't be only $50. My question is are they any good ? are parts still available? Who actually manufatured them? I have not contacted the seller so I have no year or model info for you. General advice on walk or run from this brand would be fine. Also any particular models to avoid. I've only ever seen a few of the Fords, they LOOKED to be well built. I've only ever owned Cub Cadets.

The Ford/Jacobsen is the way to go. Unless you can find a ford like mine. The lgt 14 or 16D model. It is manufactored by Shibaura. It is a 3cyl liquid cooled diesel. Hydrostatic trans. Hi/lo diff. This is TWICE as good and more powerful than a Jacobsen. Front/Mid P.T.O's. The mower deck is 44" or the optional 48". The mower deck is driven by a shaft to a gearbox. Unreal power. In 1988 mine was $6200, with all the options, but p/steer. I should have got that. Rich D.

It was a steal because it was gone by the time I called. Thanks again for the advice.

A guy gave me a Ford lawn tractor for free and hauling it away! Said the engine just kind of "wound down and stopped"! no wonder--it had no oil in it! any way, the tractor would have passed for a Craftsman tractor, if i had changed the hood! It looked just like my other Craftsman tractor. I sold it for parts, as the engine had gone to lunch.

They were pretty decent tractors. I've seen quite a few in the $50 range around here. Some are pretty rough though.
If it runs and things don't knock, go for it.
I,like Tim can't pass up a $50 tractor or better yet a $30 AMF 1010 in like new condition. What a piece of machinery. It's just like a Massey 10.
Great tractors.

Stronics: Sounds like a steal to me! A friend gave me 4 push lawnmowers this summer--he said they were all junk, and if I could rob any parts off from them, I was welcome to them. One condenser, 2 flywheel keys, and a 3" piece of recoil rope later, I have 4 perfectly healthy lawnmowers--it"s amazing what people throw away!

Depending on what model Ford it is.
There has been at least 4 manufacturers of Ford tractors I know of. they are:
Jacobson,Gilson, Ariens, Toro. I think that Toro is still building them.
Jacobson were the big heavy broot.
Gilson were all smaller lawn tractors, the most common, Ariens were fair size and Toro is a fari sized tractor. For what it sounds like you are chasing it is an old Jacobson or Gilson.

Rhouston: go for it--they were pretty decent tractors, usually with a Kohler engine. Even if it's a total POS, it's certainly worth $50 in parts. (Disclaimer: this is the same line I use on myself whenever I see something setting side the road with a "free" sign on it......)

Most of the Fords were made by Jacobsen. You will see the same body styles and drive types between the LGT series and the larger Jakes. The smaller ones are mostly the same way.

Parts are obselete and impossible to find but if the tractor runs or you have some good fab skills you can make anything work. I have a Jacobsen LT860 that hasnt had any mechanical troubles but its pretty much been done over by me and is nothing like stock.
