We have a JD mower model LT180, it has the hydrostatic transmission in it, well today mom was on it, backed up and went to go forward and it just sat there, wouldn't go anywhere, it acts like it wants to start to move but the whole time it sounds like gears scraping. the more rpm's the more it scrapes, i'm guessing the tranny is gone??? any ideas?? the belt is ok, i checked it first thing. |

Check key for shear on axles. With a helper sitting on the mower. Remove plastic cover off center of the rear wheels. Have helper try and go forward or reverse. If the axle(center shaft) rotates but the wheel doesn't, remove wheel to find out why.Check key for shear on the pulley with fan blade on top of the transmission. You might be able to lift up the seat to inspect it. It should be obvious without runnnig the engine if the pulley is loose. I had one and it was jumpy like that. I could see how it would shear one of those woodruff keys.

Check that woodruff/sq keys on each rear axle that tie wheel hub/rim to axles aren't sheared or missing,if either key sheared/missing tractor won't move & axle will spin in rim sometimes making sound you hear, both keys must be present and intact.

Sounds like you stripped the splines out of the trans input shaft pulley. Head over to your dealer and pick one up. They should be about $50 or so. Not the end of the mowers life by a long shot.

Great! Happy mowing. Weather is turning here in west mi and will soon be switching over to the snow thrower. I'm looking forward to that. :-) Tim
