pulled the 25hp briggs and put my 20hp kohler courage single on it. everything hooked up fine and even wired the same. problem now is the kohler is building crankcase pressure and blowing dipstick out. i know motor is fine because i have used it for a year pulling trailer and no problems. only thing i done different is kohler was gravity fed fuel and briggs has a vacuum fuel pump, so i mounted pump and came off vacuum hose on kohler valve cover to power pump. i know that this is probably problem, but book on kohler shows some models to have a fuel pump running from this fitting. what could the problem be and is there another place to get vacuum from? |

| think i answered own question. the kohler doesnt have a seperate crankcase breather like the briggs does. the kohler has to vent crankcase pressure through breather tube that runs to back of airfilter assembly. i was using this line to supply vacuum to fuelpump thus eliminating a place to vent pressure, thus blowing dipstick. book showed a drillable boss under the flywheel shroud to drill and tap and screw in a fitting to supply vacuum for this model with fuelpump. did this and drove around about 45 minutes, even mowed with it some, and never blew dipstick, or even built up other than normal pressure. i knew briggs used valve cover for fuelpump vacuum, but i never thought about the seperate crankcase breather that the kohler does not have. seems to have it fixed, but if it dont, i will let you know. thanks for the input. |

| After reflecting on the way your post worded overnight,I realized you were probably dead heading crankcase vent with pump & causeing pressure buildup in crankcase as same now had no way to vent, however you found/cured problem before I was going to reply this morning.I only have a manual for twin,so I didn't check to see if done the same way. |

| Check crankcase to see if oil level overfull/smells of gas,if so the problem may be in carb if a walbro,a question was posted last wk about a walbro carb on a command eng, after doing some checking on ebay & kohler parts website I found out depending if eng used a gravity feed system or pump there is a difference in hole diam on float needle seat, the gravity feed seat hole is larger than the pump seat hole, this may be your problem, the smaller hole in seat for pump system acts as a pressure reducer, when useing pump on a gravity feed carb pump pressure may be pushing needle open, causeing eng to run rich & pumping gas into crankcase when eng running.Try running eng on a gravity feed & see if that cures problem.Check carb pn,then check at kohler online parts store to see if they list a seperate carb repair kit for a gravity feed carb & a pump carb, eng might use same carbs as command series. |
