Deere 400

I need a little help diagnosing my engine. It's a kohler532. It started back firing out the exhaust while mowing a few days ago but still ran ok otherwise. Now it back fires out the exhaust and intake runs like crap, missing and backfiring. I replaced the points, condenser, and plugs all of which looked ok. Getting compression of 120 on one cyl and 125 on the other. Runs the same (bad) on either cyl with the plug wire unhooked.

Any help sure appreciated.

Clean your carb.

Valves could be sticking when warm. I'd try feeding it a little Seafoam down the carb while running at 1/2 throttle or more. Then add a few ounces to the gas and run it for awhile then let it sit till cool.

Doesn't cost much, good practice anyway and can't hurt.

I'm 98% sure it's not the carb and I was considering the valves since I pretty much eliminated the ignition. I was hoping for something simple I had missed. Guess it's time to get dirty and tear into it.

My 400 played that game. New points and a carb clean and it runs great now.
