You should go to the Ingersoll website and print out the correct parts manual for the serial number of your tractor. It's free. You should understand up front that Case no longer supports these tractors because they sold that division 27 years ago to Ingersoll. You need to drain the hydraulic system and refill it with 20W50 motor oil. Then change the engine oil and refill with straight 30W. You can use either of those oils in the trans-axle when you change that oil out. What else do you need to know? Ingersoll [Reply]  [No Email]

According to the Op manual tractor has double acting, self energizing, mechanical, contracting band, with drum shaft driven from transmission. The holding valve prevents the machine from "freewheeling" down a hill, as the hydraulics that came on the early 446/448's didn't have this holding feature. Later versions had it built into the hydraulic control valve, and there are (were?) also available kits to install this valve. Way back in the early 1980's, I think I paid over $300 for a holding valve and the bre-bent tubing to connect it into the system. There is a Case forum on yahoo groups that has a very good group of folks who are really into these machines, and can answer any questions you may have. The Op manual does mention using the retard for "very slow speed is desired or when operating on an incline to prevent the tractor from over-riding the oil flow, and running free".
