Well I think I found the reason the engine is racing on my FIL's 801. The governor does't seem to be doing anything. When you pull back the throttle, it stays there and the governor dosn't compensate at all. This tractor sat for about 2 yrs without being run, could something just be stiff in there? You can move the gov arm ahead and back by hand. Any ideas where I go from here? |

| A sticky throttle shaft could do this also. |

| | he says he rebuilt the carb. one would hope that means he's already observed whether the butterfly will actually move or not. one hopes anyway.. :) |

| Yep start it up with it at idle and then by hand try to open up the throttle and if the gov does not push back you got gov problems. If it does you got linkage problems |

| if you can move the hand throttle and it's rod tot he gov, and the gov does nothing.. try one more thing. set hand throttle at min.. then manually reach over and pull gov rod to make it goose carb.. if it don't fight.. time for a front cover -ectomy :) |

| Tried to move the governor rod and there is no response. How much disassembly is needed for a front cover-ectomy? Can it be done without removing the front end? |

| Yep, that is what I did. Do you know if there is enough room to get the front cover off without removing the entire front end? |

| not to be rude.. but have you actually looked at the governor and timing cover? there is either a 1 or 2 piece cover.. etc. do you have a service manual? here are some pics of the 1 pc cover.. the 4/5 bolt 2 piece and trhe later governor. plan on a front split |
