801 Engine Races

After sitting a couple years due to clutch problems, I finally had a chance this winter to pull my father in law"s 801 into the garage and give a good going over. Got the clutch fixed and went though the hydraulics, no problem. I rebuilt the carb and put new plugs in it and it started right up. It seems to idle fine but as soon as I touch the throttle just a little, the engine races to what sounds like about 4 times as fast as I"ve ever heard a Ford run. Any idea what might be causing this? It is a 736 carb. I read on another post that it could be possible to install the throttle shaft upside down and it would cause this. I double checked and everything is put together correctly. Any ideas? Thanks

I never heard of a 736 carb. It should be a Marvel-Schebler TSX-662, TSX-769 or TSX-813.
Is the linkage to the governor connected properly?

736 carb??? As the other guy said never heard of it. That said is the linkage hooked up correctly and is it free to move as it should?? Make sure the linkage is free moving and also make sure all the throttle linkage springs are good and hooked up as they should be

ditto what old said.

make sure the linkages move smothly.. disconnect the gov to carb arm and then bump the hand throttle and see if the gov yanks the linkage hard.

see if you can maually manipulate the butterfly smoothly.

I had a similar problem after I rebuilt the TSX-769 for my tractor, although not quite as drastic. For the goverenor to work right the throttle shaft on the carb must turn freely and easily with no resistance. If you replaced the throttle shaft as part of the rebuild, maybe yours was like mine in that the flat on the shaft was not machined right (foreign junk!) and the throttle plate sat down too deeply in the carb and at a slight angle. This caused the throttle to stick so when running the engine and pulling back on the throttle nothing would happen at first as you pulled on the governor spring, then further movement would cause it to jump making the engine race. I couldn't make this part work I had to put the old shaft back in. Suggest you check yours with all the linkage disconnected from the carb. -Will
