This week I pull the shaft out of a pump like yours that had been rebuilt and found they had mess up the O ring and the top cup seal was folded back over the bottom seal. It came in a 941 that i bought and parted out. The PO had the pump rebuilt and never got it running. I kept the engine and it had broken rings and was in bad shape. All that to say it could still be the seals on the shaft. It sounds like you are doing the best thing dropping the pan to get an idea where it is coming from anyway it is what I would have done.
