I am Pulling some parts from a non running NAA to a still using 6 volt Jubilee. The NAA is definitely converted to 12 volt but the generator has three wires going from it and looks like the original, cast iron front. There are no numbers on it. Did older generators 6 and 12 both look the same? OR did whoever made this conversion leave the old 6 volt in? How do I tell what voltage a generator is? |

Here is a photo of a factory 6V from my '63 4000 gasoline tractor
You'll notice the only differences in appearance between it and the following factory 12V on my '64 4000 diesel is that it has a narrow band around its circumference near the back end and the diesel does not. The 12V diesel does have a cooling fan and one cooling slot on the bottom as Tony suggests. The 6V gasoline does not. |

| Hello JMOR , Yes all tractors had just the one slot to keep the water out and let the heat out . Many Industrial units used truck generators with the truck rubber boot on the back of them to keep water out . Thanks Tony |

| Hello JMOR, You are very close all 6 Volt Generators(made 1953-1965) look as your photo and are sealed front and rear of case . Your 12 Volt Gen. photo is a Car or Truck Generator which ALL HAVE FOUR SLOTS in the rear of the case . Original Ford Diesel Tractor 12 Volt Gen.(made from 1958-1965 , no diesels in the hundred series) have ONLY ONE SLOT in the rear of the case pointing downward . The bands are generally on REMANUFACTURED UNITS(because car, truck, and tractors are the same case design except the cooling slots) from Ford or many of the Brand Name Rebuilders to keep the water out of them when installed in Tractors or other Ford Industrial applications . THANKS TONY |

| Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see!2v generators of the next gen diesel tractors had a pulley fan & cooling slots at rear of barrel. Any 6 v can be modified into a 12v. Measure resistance of field coils with Ohmmeter connected from Field terminal to case ground & if about 2 to 4 Ohms, it is a 6v & if about twice that, then a 12v. I did say 'about'. Such a rule of thumb does not apply to 100 ampere fire truck/ambulance generators & the like. |

| a 12v genny should have a cooling slot at the back.. may have a band around it hiding it. |
