I am installing a 801 engine
in my 821 utility tractor loader.
I picked up a 601 gas tank and raised
it about 1/5 inches. I need to pick
up an air cleaner. do I use a 601 or 801 air
cleaner??

Do I need to make modifications??
Thanks

The 801 air cleaner will NOT fit with the 601 tank. The left rear corner of the 801 tank is indented to allow clearance for the large 801 air cleaner.

I don't have any hands on experience with either 801 or 601 series tractors. The pic shows a 601 tank next to the larger 801 tank. The indent is clearly seen on the 801 tank. But since the difference in size appears to be below the seam and since the "shorter" 601 tank will be mounted on an 801 with the hood set up higher, won't there be room under that 601 tank for the bigger air cleaner? Does anyone have a side-by-side comparison photo of a 601 air cleaner with an 801 air cleaner?

The difference is below the seam but where he is concerned is the relation to the mounting point and the bottom of the tank.
Since the 601 tank is smaller in height he may be able to add some square tubing under the tank mounting brackets with some longer bolts to raise the whole tank up.
This will effect the fuel line placement but should be a easy fix.

My 601 tank (as compared with the right
tank) does not that the high mounting
brackets as yours does. It actually
has mounting strips similar to the tank
on the left. Why is that????

Corvetteguy, my 641's tank doesn't have the thick brackets either - has the brackets that look more like the picture on the left as well. I was starting to think I was the only one, and thought perhaps mine had the wrong gas tank on it. But everything else about it looks exactly like the one on the right in the picture.

Good pictures

But I can't see where one tank is
dented in to accommodate the
air cleaner.

Thanks

At the bottom of the photo, at the rear of the 801 tank on the side that is resting on the ground, you can see a softball size dent in that rear corner of the tank. It's a designed indentation for the air cleaner and not the result of an accident.

Look closely at the tank on the left where it's sitting on the ground, between the seam and the mounting bracket. You can easily see the indention for the air cleaner. Here's a photo of another 801 tank.

Jim,
Didn't Mark Williams over on the other N tractor website buy your 801 tank because of this very problem? He bought a used "801" tank for his 841 and when he tried to install the air cleaner it wouldn't fit. It turned out that the used "801" tank he bought was actually a 601 tank and the seam was hitting his air cleaner.

Yeah, the 801 tank is sold and gone now, but I don't remember all the reasons he wanted it. You're probably right.

So your installing the correct engine into that tractor since an 8821 is in fact one of the models of the 801 series. The 801 series had the 821, the 831, the 841 the 851 and etc. As for the air cleaner you want the one that should be on that tractor as in the 801 series air cleaner
