I purchased a 1957 Ford 960 last year and would like to know what oil would be best to run in this tractor. Also, any recommendations on what brand or type of hydraulic fluid to use?

I like the 80W-90 in gearcases myself. I run only Archer Lubricants. However they are not available everywhere.

I use 30W oil in all but one of my tractors. But I live in Missouri where it is almost never all that cold so not a problem in the winter. As for the trans/hyds/rear end I use the UTF in my 841 ford and use that also in all my other tractors

i don't know your location.. but I run a bunch of ford red tiger engines and 00/01 /000 4 cyl machines.. have many rowcrops.. they are my favorite.

here are my recomendations.

15w40 C rated oil for the engine. if you are anywhere south of say.. michigan or so.. this will be ok. if you are north or colder.. then a 10w30..

red tigers generally hold good oil pressure even when used a bit.

for trans, hyds, and diffy:

you CAN run 80w90 gl5 gear oil in the tranny and diffy, in fact.. unless in cold-cold weather.. I like to do that. unless your hyds to diffy seal leaks... if it leaks at the inner pto shaft seal seperating the sumps, then run UTF in hyds, diffy and tranny, and final drives.

if running gear oil in the diffy.. i usually run 80w90 in diffy.. though will fill the final drives with same brand 85-140.

brand? just about any will do. mine have been on a diet of supertech fluids for a long time now.

if yours is a spin on filter.. a fram ph8a, supertech st8a, motorcraft fl1a filter fits. ( napa 1452, 1515, etc.. )

if a cartridge oil filter.. napa 1004 or fram ch6pl

i put 85-140 in the steering pedistal as well as the steering gearbox.. though a 0 or 00-ep grease in both would be acceptable.

What about GL-5 and yellow metal in the tranny? I was always told/read that you need straight mineral oil, aka GL-1 for that.

on a 9n-2n-8n, I'd use a gl1-3 oil.. or a mt1 rated gl5 oil that was yellow metal safe.

the post of this thread has a ford 960 it does not have a hyd pump in the belly pan loaded with yellow metal.

Okaye, so the yellow metal thing isn't bronze bushings holding the ends of shafts with the gears on them, it's in a hyd pump. Hmm. Learn something every day. Course one of the mental conflicts that I have had since first reading of this, years ago, was that if it was bronze bushings used in trannys years ago, what do they use for material for that function in today's tractors?

Thanks,
Mark

here's the issues. there are synchro's etc.. that are yellow metal. they are wear items.. etc

the N pumps have yellow metal in them.. and well.. N pumps are getting expensive.. and replacement parts are of dubious quality nowadays.

thus.. we like to use oil that has no possibility to damage an N pump.

todays tractors use UTF maily.. and it is yellow metal safe.

You also commonly find MT1 rated gear oil nowadays that is yellow metal safe.

20ys ago? no so much.. only a few manufacturers offered a gl4 that was YMS.

Boy! Lots of different thoughts out there on brands of lubricant.
However, a good 10W30 at temps above 10degrees engine oil,& almost all the modern hydraulic/transmission fluids. Are better than what was available in the '50,s
