I have a 801 that runs fine until it warms up and than it starts to sputter and than will quit. ,after it sits for 10 or 15 minutes it will start up and run just fine.Put new points and condenser in and same problem. Could it be the coil? any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Kevin

I'm guessing you hit the nail on the head w/ coil. Check your spark when it dies and see if it checks out.

could it be the coil?

could it?

it might be a sunspot.. bt I doubt it.

diagnose first before spending money.

at first issue.. check spark.. then fuel.

almost sounds like fuel starvation.. but could sure be a failing elec connection becoming resistive with heat.

post back after spark test and UD's jumper hotwire..

Always trouble shoot then do parts never part them trouble shoot you can cause your self more problems other wise.
You say warmed up is that 5 minutes or 30 minutes?? When it does that and dies right then check for spark from the coil wire as in the center wire of the distributor cap. You need a blue/white spark there and it has to jump a 1/4 inch gap or more. Also is this 6 or 12 volts helps us help you. Next check for fuel flow out the carb drain plug and then post back what you have found. By the way let it flow for a few minutes catch ot so as to look for dirt/water etc

I will go back alittle bit.The Tractor sat about 4 years before we got it.had a few things to fix before we fired it up. this is a 6 volt system, cleansd the carb and gas tank.I can run the Tractor about 1 1/2-2 hrs before it starts to act up.I have pulled the plug on carb, gas runs out just fine.after tractor sets about 1/2Hour it starts up andruns like nothing happened.I will not be able to work on the tractor for a couple weeks. If anyone is willing to wait for a reply on this you can e mail me directly at krazy660@gmail.com and thanks in advance
Kevin

My e-mail is open all the time on here. I have people call me on my home phone at times to help them fix there tractors. One that runs that long then acts up sounds like a fuel tank vent problem or a fuel tank that has fuel boiling it in due to the heat shied not being on it any more

I agree with this post. Fuel could be boiling. Try starting it after 45 seconds or so instead of 10-20 minutes. If it will start back after the shorter duration and run nicely for a little while, then your fuel is most likely boiling in the line from missing heat shield etc.

Kevin,
Rig up a jumper wire with alligator clips on both ends. Next time it sputters like that hook the jumper across the two poles on the back of the key switch and see if that helps.
Those switches are a known failure point.
PS,
Post back with your results.
And DON'T spend any money on parts till we tell you to.
Too many guys just keep throwing money at these things without first doing some very simple tests.
