My guess is 5th and 7th are not there as well. If you find this to be the case, C3 (clutch 3) is not applying. The only way 1st and 3rd could be inoperative without affecting other ratios is if the lobes for both of them are worn off their cam at the control valve body. I've never seen this happen, nor have I ever heard of it happening. Furthermore, having grown up with SOS, I can not conceive of this scenario as even a remote possibility. Any clutch or band that malfunctions in this transmission will affect at least 4 ratios, minimum. ORC/DDC or B1 failure will affect at least half of your ratios. I acquired the 4000 D SOS from an owner who had spent $3,500 on the SOS and it still didn't work. The Bozo that worked on it shouldn't be allowed to own wrenches. Upon opening the SOS we find inside remnants of a shop rag, 2 thrust washers, and a snap ring on a cluitch pack not in machined groove. We replaced all orings, seals, clutches, bands & rings. Still didn't work. Bozo had replaced control valve with one from a ORC model. Sure to drive you nuts. Pressures on the three guages did not make sense. Works like a charm now. Has to be the most expense 4000 in the country. You can see pics of it in "tractor photos" Ford. [Reply]  [No Email]

You'll need to get the appropriate repair manual for your tractor and the tools (gauges and fittings) to do any trouble shooting. Perhaps one of the retired guys or even someone with gray whiskers can chime in and tell you if first and third are on the same band or servo. I went into a 4 cylinder 2000 SOS about 28 years ago to do some minor repairs, the only reason I was able to get the parts I needed was our dealer bought them for someone 15 years earlier and they never picked them up, they gave me a gentle reminder not to screw up putting it back together this time 'cause I had the last new parts I'd get.
