hey guys, i installed a hydraulic flow control on my plow system to help it lower alittle slower. i could not get my fittings to not leak until i used teflon tape on the threads. i did use the teflon tape that comes in the yellow plastic thing that is good for petroleum, gas etc, etc. has anyone here ever had to use teflon tape on a brand new hydraulic component. pick of valve attached....

Mike in the Army we used teflon tape on all fittings for the hydraulics and automatic transmission lines. Anything from lawnmowers to tanks. Just be careful and not let it get into the hydraulic system. Wrap it the oppsite way the pipe is threaded, so it doesnt bunch up and get pushed out of the threads.

I use teflon tape on tapered threads and have for years. I use care in the method of application and how much I use. Never had a problem.

Ditto that. Two wraps at least one thread from the edge and you're fine.

I have also heard to never use tape especially with hydraulics, but it does seem like sometimes the tape works when the sealant doesn't. Therefore, I mostly use tape and try to be careful to avoid future problems as SG stated. Yellow tape is heavier than white. Doug

Pipe thread always requires teflon tape or sealant. I sometimes use the liquid teflon stuff. Most times I use tape. Keep back one thread or so and make sure you wrap the male end clockwise as the open end faces you. Wrap it the wrong way and it will unravel.

taper pipe thread fitings sometimes require a thread dressing to seal correctly.. sometimes not.. newer ntpf generally don't.

as for the dressing. thread tape is never on my list.

it shreds and tears.. shreds can stick a check valve or hand in bad palces. they can wreak havoc on a carb.. and the teflon is so resistant.. cleaners and whatnot won't remove it if it gets inthe system.

I use a quality paste dressing like gasoila.. orsome off the shelf harveys white thread paste product.

in any case.. tape or paste.. avoid the first thread... a lil goes a long way.. overuse of either can lead to problems..
