I found a 961 Diesel locally. any tips / things
to look closely at would be appreciated. I am a
diesel guy and really feel the need to upgrade
from my gassers.

initial questions:
who made the inj pumps?
preglow system?
block heater retrofit availability?
injector costs / availability?
any thing else specific to early for diesels?

diesel fuel in crankcase is caused by one or a combination of three things; pump drive shaft seals, faulty injector or injector return lines.

The vast majority of these pumps can be overhauled for $30.00 in parts if you know what you're doing. There are a few that have more serious problems, however.

I've only had mine for a year, 861D. I installed a inline hose heater last winter and it worked great, fired up on the coldest Michigan days. Starts fast, works hard, I'm really enjoying it!

I installed a block heater where one of the freeze plugs was.I believe it made by Phillips Temro.

Zeb..I have a "58 861 that I have restored over the last year or so. These are some of the issues I had.
Diesel fuel in engine oil: rebuilt injection pump $400. I think this is a fairly common issues from what I can tell.
Engine serious blowby: Rebuilt engine by shop and by me about $3000 total
Injectors: Set of 4 rebuilt injectors (ebay) $200 and I still have my old ones.Don"t know if I needed them or not but while I had everything apart I went for it. New nozzles are now available new so you shouldn"t have a problem with that.
Pump to Injector lines: they made 2 different diameters and mine were mixed. Got 2 used ones for $30 each.
Another common issue is the standpipe in the fuel tank. It is a piece that performs several important functions that you cannot get any more. Mine was broken but I repaired it with a little solder etc.
If your tractor has power steering you need to look at that very carefully. Cylinders and pumps are big $$$. I rebuilt my pump for a few bucks but needed 1 Cylinder $200. Some PS lines you cant get anymore and I had my son (mechanic) make a set up for me. At least the steel ones. I think they make rubber ones now as replacements.
Manifold heaters are available (2) I think I spent $40 each
That is what I went thru, but I only wanted to do this once. I probably could have gotten away with doing less but I don"t like opening things up more than once, especially since I stripped all the parts down and painted evrything myself.
Anyway HTH and your milage may vary....

What was causing the diesel fuel in the crankcase? I had that problem with my 861D.

I just went through that so called "upgrade" from gas to diesel here over the last couple of years.
I'll admit the diesels are simpler and use less fuel. But they sure do stink and they sure are noisy.

Ultradog, Hello, I have to agree with you on the noise and smell,I've worked on diesels in heavy trucks for 40 years. They can have some serious and expensive problems. And the last thing I want to do is smell Diesel smoke and listen to that clatter when i'm mowing the yard.
The original concept for diesel was long life and cheep fuel, Till the last decade it was always half the cost of gas,And gassers hold up a lot longer than they use to after they cut the compression down and they quit wearing the cylinders so bad, remember when cylinder ridge reamers were comon shop tool? I haven't used mine for 20 years.
I see little advantage with diesel tractor today except for heavy farming. You can buy a lot of plugs and points for what an injection pump costs LOL Just my thoughts on the subject. -ed

They use 2 heaters in the intake manifold. Look like spark plugs. Start good unassisted to about 40 degrees. Heaters are effective as is ether, but don't use both. I have a 861D & a 4 cyl 4000 D SOS. Great little tractors. My 4000 can be seen in the Ford pics section. Be sure to have a good battery. Diesels need to spin.

Roosa Master, now Stanadyne made the pump. Check the governor out. The plastic retaining ring has a tendancy to disentegrate;
