i have a ford skidsteer with the german made 4 cyl overhead valve engine. it is rated at 40 hp. since the parts are so unavable i was thinking of putting a 26 hp three cyl mits deisel in its place. has anyone out there done this before and were there any drawbacks as to project?

I think that it's a lot of work for a minimal return. But it comes down to repairability. You can always find a way to fix it, but how fast? Is this your front-line loader? If so, leave it as-is and find a back-up machine. If you're not that fond of it, take the 2500.00 you can get for it and put it toward a Bobcat 610 or a Case 1835 or something. I have a CL-20, and would be hard pressed to part with it. I'm kind of in the same boat as you, Onan doesn't make engines anymore; parts prices have skyrocketed. But I have a Case 1816 on another farm so if the Ford goes down it's not a big deal.

I though you could get more parts for the engine than the skid steer loader, I would not spend much on it if it were mine.

hi new to the forum. saw the cl40 and i to have one. pulled the v4 out and put a 3 cyl mit diesel in its place. then i had a huge problem. the input shaft broke off at the face of the pump. of corse the pumps are obsolete so i am looking for a pump shaft for a ta1515v vickers pump. i have tracked down the part number for the part 397737. any help out there? thanks

Not sure if it makes finding parts any easier, but that V-4 Ford engine was used in the Saab 95, 96 and Sonett in the late 60's/early 70's.
