I have a loader on my 5000 that I rarely attach because it is powered off the weak stock hydraulic pump and is slower than molasses in winter. I can't mount a "stinger" pump off the front as the loader framework goes right in front of the bolster and I don't want a pump hanging out in front.

I have a 16gpm gear pump laying around that I was thinking of using to power the loader (not ideal for a loader but better than the 5gpm stock pump). It has the proper rotation to mount it with a V-belt off the motor.

Do you guys think that the single front V-belt will be able transmit enough power to spin the pump?

If I mounted the pump would it be possible to still use the rear sump as the reservoir?

My thought with this pump is I have it laying around so there would essentially be no cost other than my time fabbing a bracket, and a longer V-belt. But I don't want to spend many hours fabbing a bracket only to have it not work.

Some equipment that I run has a very short PTO shaft as it is, so adding a pump to the mix would make them almost non existent.

Looks like I'll stick to using my backhoe as the loader tractor as there's no good way to put a pump on the 5000.

A front stinger pump is out because the steering for the roadless MFWD setup is right in front of the crank pulley so you can't get a driveshaft for a pump through there.

A PTO pump is out because I use the PTO just about every time its running, and they are clumsy and cumbersome to have to attach and reattach all the time.

You do know that they make some pass threw type PTO pumps as in you can have the pump and also be able to use the PTO shaft at the same time. Ya they cost but that is an option or you could also instead of a belt drive pump up front set up a chain drive and then you get no slip. Over the years I have rigged up many a hyd system from junk I have laying around and all have done as I needed them to do all be it not as good as some could do

16 GPM x 2500 PSI = 23 HP = NO WAY with a single belt.

If you don't wish to mount a front pump, then I'd use a PTO pump. The other problem is finding a suitable inlet off of your rear axle. The 5000 does not lend itself to doing this easily. If you do not have a handbrake, I might look into going through the round LH access plate with some sort of 90 degree manifold on the inside. The drain plug will be way too small to use as an inlet.

I really can't see this working out. The 'B' series belt on that tractor is NOT in any way shape or form going to drive that pump unless you had mabey a 15" pulley on the pump. To mount another pulley to the front of the crank pulley I think you're going to run out of room against the fan shroud... and even with a 'C' belt it's still going to be a touchy thing to drive with a short belt.
If it was mind I would rearrange the loader mounts to install the stinger pump and then make some solid guards around the pump.
A Prince PTO pump is another option. A second option is to look up the dual pump option for a 2610... I beleieve they had a 2 section gear pump mounted on the engine cam arpeture for the 26/3610.... that made mabey 12 gpm. You'd need to install the cam gear on the 5000 engine to drive it... which would require a split and removal of the flywheel but it should be doable...

I've had neighbours try to drive hydraulic pumps for heavier applications off truck engines with 'B' belts. It just doesn't work. They're fine for 5 gpm, low pressure... plow applications but not 2500 psi, 15 gpm loaders. These guys 'got by' with what they did but it meant running the engine at idle when the pump clutch was engaged, etc.

Rod,

The engine mount pump is not an option because of lack of clearance at the fuel tank. That, and then combining that flow with the rear axle pump would be a bit of work, and not worth the hassle in my opinion.

Good point about the bump in the tank. I forgot about that. I don't think that would deter me tho. That 20 gal tank might become an 18.5 gal tank.... or I might go about swapping in a 10 series tank. I don't think they'd be that different to mount.
As far as flow... I don't think I'd bother combining the rear pump flow if I got the two section engine pump and made it fit. It wouldn't be brisk but it would do.
Any way you look at it... still a lot of hassle.

In my former life designing auxiliary drive equipment off diesel engines, we always ran the hydraulic pump with gears directly off the engine, because we could. If you look at the horsepower requirements, you are probably in the 5-8 hp for this pump, so running it with a belt is doable, but running it with 2 belts is even better if you can get a double belt pulley to work. If it's one belt, use the thickest belt you can. The key will be how you operate it as Old says, if you are constantly bumping against the relief valve and loading it hard, you will need to keep your eye on the belt slippage. I differ from Old here that I would use the rear sump as the reservoir, it is already there and full of fluid. I tend to use the UTF in everything so I only have one type of hydraulic fluid and the sump on a 5000 is big. Just my opinion, I want to hear how it works for you.

If you use as large a diameter pulley as you can you should have enough power BTDT on a Celtric crawler I have and it works ok. Ya if you push it real hard the belt may slip but you will hear that pretty fast. As for the sump/tank I would add a 4 or 5 gal tank to the side of the loader and that way you can use a UTF type fluid and also not worry about starving the other system
