Hi everyone. I finally got my new battery tray in, manifold, carb and exhaust painted and on. Got all the wiring back together (didn't take much), and no crank or click when I hit the button. My battery was just charged (12.3v). I decided to get my marine battery and jump the starter directly--ground to alternator bracket, pos. to starter connection. (That battery also tests at 12.3v). The starter cranked slowly. Jumped it directly from the first battery to check it and it cranked slowly also. Meanwhile, the jumper cables were getting real hot--they're not real heavy nor really light gauge. Any ideas? Could the paint be causing a problem somewhere? It started and ran fine before I disassembled for painting. Thanks in advance. Doug

I never thought of the metallic never seize products for helping conductance, but it makes sense.

Hello Doug , If you are jumping the starter directly with the jumper cables from another battery , as in postive on the cable post and negative on the starter it's self ground has nothing to do with it because you are making a new ground with the cables . Sounds more like a worn out starter , probably just needs new set of brushes turn and polish the armature replace the bushing and the bearing on the shaft and reassemble it . Thanks Tony

Yep poor starter ground where it mounts. Sand off the paint where the starter mounts and you problem will go bye bye. And or ground the system right at one of the starter mount bolts

Thanks, Old. I never did remove the starter; however, I did paint it already installed. Would that still create the condition you stated? Thanks!

Well if it sat for say 6 months bolted on and not used it could well have rusted so yep still could well be a poor ground or it could also be a start that was on its way out and sitting that long just took it over the edge. Easy thing to do is pull it and take it in and have it checked

it's worth removing and wire brushing and reinstalling. i also like to run a bat ground right to the starter bolt too. never hurts..

Makes sense. We've also had some heavy rains the last three weeks and it sits out. Will do. Thanks!

Between the starter and the trans? Or were you thinking somewhere else? Thanks, Doug

yup.. and the 2 NS compouds I mention should actually help conductance by fighting corrosion and adding a metal filled compound at all connection points..

BTW, is the starter solenoid supposed to ground thru the mounting bolts to the battery tray? My guess would be no... thanks

ground as you know is the THUMB BUTTON on the top of the trans that you PUSH to engage the solenoid.

Well the reason I am on here most of the time is to help if and when I can. In your case it still sound like it could be a poor ground but then it could also be a weak starter and lack of use has taken it toll on it
