Tisco water pump went in easy, no more leaks.
Spent an hour wailing on the tire bead with a 10-12# tire maul. Maybe made some progress but it was 90F out and after an hour I figured I was done. Made 5 trips around the rim on both sides, but no major movement.
Found a guy locally who unmounted the tire for me, sold me a new tube, cleaned up the inside of the old tire and remounted it on a spare 12x24 rim that I had picked up a few months back. I'll try to patch up the old rim but I think that's a winter job. It looks pretty bad, probably a 4" square area at least that needs to be patched up.
Worked the tractor a little bit with the rake attached. The hydraulic pump seems kind of noisy when lifting. Might just be the tubes vibrating, can't tell yet. Much noiser than the gear pump in the 4000su.
Only leak I see so far is a slight bit of gasoline making a film on the side of the carb bowl. I suspect the carb body or the bowl is slightly bent from the PO either banging on it or overtightening the screws. Will probably pull it and check for flatness, maybe I can carefully level it up with a piece of sandpaper on a thick glass plate. Any advice there? I put things together with the gaskets dry, no permatex, no indian head, no nothing.
All in all pretty pleased to see the machine running and no longer on jack stands.
Greg

| Good to hear it's coming along. I've never worked on a 3-cyl. gas. They really sandwich the air cleaner in there! |

There's supposed to be a seat? Dang. I should buy a shop manual. :^)
I actually have the old foam cushion but no cover. The pan underneath is totally rusted out. I popped the base back on temporarily but I'm tuning up an old "deluxe" seat base (the pan we both like) and should have that on soon.
Is the old style tin the louvered hood from '65 to 4/68? This one is a '66 and it has the louvered hood, you can see it here:

The reason I found this tractor at all was because I was looking for a 3400 for parts to get the front end! But now that I have it, I think it's a pretty nice little machine. I'm actually thinking about taking the loader off the 4000su and leaving the big mower hooked up all summer long, and using the 3400 gasser with the loader to move material and also snow.
Thanks Ultradog --

| Great looking tractor Greg. I see you take the seat in at night so no one will steal the tractor. I always thought if you put that front end on an SU it would be a pretty cool combo. Put the girlie SU axle under this one. Direct bolt up both ways. I see it has the old style ps pump. Has it old or new style tin? Pretty easy to cut a 4" piece out of a rim and replace it with another one. Use a slitting wheel in an angle grinder. Weld it in. Thanks for the photo. I always like the photos. |

| greg, i recently had to wail on a tire. i tired quickly of wailing and decided to try a different twist. i placed a 4x4x8 right on the bead and backed my truck up the 4x4. within a couple feet the bead was broke loose. i fliped it over and repeated.
boy i wish had another project tractor to work on. |
