I did some searching but didnt come up with anything yet...
Waiting to get manuals here - but wanted to get a jump start on some work on the lil ladies tractor.
Im good with everything there that connects or terminates outside of the case... but need to figure out what two wires are. Hoping a diagram would explain it.
First wire goes into the top plate on the SoS trans next to where the shift cable goes in. If I were a guessing man, its a saftey switch wire, not allowing the starter to engage unless in the park position?
The second wire goes along the trans and enters the case on the left side in the plate that has the oil dipstick (guessing diff oil dip stick) - but I have no idea what that would be for... it was attached in the harness to the indicator light on the right side of the dash, so maybe it lights up when the PTO is engaged? I have no manuals or any experience with it... so no idea what the two lights are for up on the column.... maybe if I knew that it would be obvious?
Any help would be appreciated... kinda wanna get working on it before the lil lady gets the manuals here.
Thanks |

| Just wanted to update...
Starter safety switch was working... it would disengage if shifted "too far" into park. But when you click it back just a little to park, it worked just fine.
So, after looking around the shop for some good plastic, I decided to make the solenoid isolators. Ran the ground via the safety switch to the solenoid frame, and all works well.
I did a complete rewire, and knowing what was going on with the oil press wire out of the left side squared that away. Now its all wired in an working fine. Put a delco alt on it, wired in a acc, off,on,start switch and good to go. New wires everywhere except the tie to the starter saftey and press switch since I didnt really want to tear into stuff not having manuals yet. So Just soldered and heat shrinked the new wire to them. Saved the OE wiring harness in case some day someone wants it for collectors reasons.
Fixed the fuel shut off valve and all the little things. Tune up... and so on.
Fired it up ran like a top. Shut it down to test the start safety, (after testing with the ohm meter) - worked great. Bumped er back into park, and gave a little bump to make sure it would still crank... and I bet the engine didnt make 1/4 revolution (I just bumped, and I mean slilght bump of the starter) and it fired up. I was impressed there.
Need some new gauges, but they should be coming shortly. And a new seat pan. But shy of that... after having sat for probably 15 years, its probably not but a day or so away from getting some toddle around time to look for running/operating issues.
Thanks for all the info everyone.

| Okay, so park only... good to know - and not all that surprising.
When I get the manual, Ill look into the adjustment of the cable in case its not seating and activating the switch.
Thanks

Older transmisison has one wire to safety switch. Safety switch is the ground on 4`cylinder 4000s. It should show continuity to ground when in park. |

| Aye, true isolating the solenoid would not be super hard to do. Supposing one has the materials on hand.
I had thought about it, but didnt know if I liked the idea of a big ole chunk of metal with + to it out there in the open for someone to short across if they didnt know how it was set up.
Ill have to think on it... May not mess with the Start safety anyway... I guess in reality, its up to the lil lady what she wants since its her twakter. :D
She should be home for the weekend so I can see what her thoughts are - and go from there.
Thanks

| Im using the newer version ford solenoid (automotive) where it grounds through the mounting plate... so no way to make that work without isolating the solenoid mount. Otherwise, Id be applying "-" to the mounting plate via ground, and then "-" to the other side of the circuit.... so "-" + "-" = no worky... need to get "+" to one of the two sides...
If I were using an isolated solenoid... no prob, just change the wires... but the parts store didnt have one local... so I just opted for the standard $6.00 solenoid and will work around it. Actually, the cost will still be cheaper doing it this way, after the relay and wires, than it would have to have them order the insulated solenoid through the local parts joint. |

"so I may have to work with a relay in the starter loop to utilize the neg ground saftey switch."
Don't think so. Solenoid won't care pos or neg gnd. |

| Thanks for the input...
I hate not having a manual to use to get familiarized. It causes a lot of dumb questions from me (as evidenced above :D)
Gonna be a few weeks out on manuals it seems... lil ladies CC number got pirated, and the card got canceled (the CC company caught it - so all is well - and then they notified her) She was going to order the manuals that day, but no, the card is canceled and she is waiting for her new card... so looks like Im a few weeks out from having "printed knowedge" to thumb through.
Speaking of manuals... Any suggestions on which ones are good to get? I have seen the I&T ones, and what might appear to be copies of the Ford Manuals... My lack of familiarity with the book brands leaves me wondering (now that I have more time to think about which ones to get) what ones contain the most info and specs. Any thoughts?
On the Start Safety... I may have to work in a relay somewhere, cause Im changing over to Neg ground, 12v, acc/off/on/start ign switch, and current model solenoid.... so I may have to work with a relay in the starter loop to utilize the neg ground saftey switch. Guess I could always mount a limit switch in the shifter housing... but not sure I want to go through that much work :D Relay might be easiest... couple short wires and viola.
Thanks again for the info!

Wade,
Once you have your manual, the top cover is nothing to be afraid of. You may find that the shifting cable is out of adjusment and is never fully reaching Park. Might be worth trying to adjust the cable first to see if that is the case (don't have to remove the cover plate). The manual will answer nearly all of your questions.

I'm not sure on the older 4 cylinder SOS transmission, but on my 3 cylinder 4000, the safety switch only lets thje tractor start when it's in park, nort neutral, and it's got 2 wires, so the switch is basically in line between the key switch and the solenoid, so neither wire would ever show any continuity to ground. |

| Wade, I never did like clutch pedal safety switches. IH used those for years before getting the switch in the proper place. It cost a big dent in the side of a car because of this feature on my 986. Borther had driven the tractor and left it in gear. It was a cold winter day. I started it up and had the engine cranking about 1500 RPM when I let the clutch out. I always put the tractor in Park when I shut it off, so hadn't bothered to check to see if it was in gear. Dad's station wagon was sitting right in front of the tractor.
It will not take that much to R & R the top cover, once you get the shop manuals. It may be a faulty switch. I just replaced one of mine with a used one out of a salvage transmission I had on hand. It could just be a broken or disconnected wire too.
The last sender I got for the lube pressure tellite came from O'Rielly's. Normally closed, opens at 2 psi and I think ¼ inch pipe thread. It's been long enough since I had one of these apart that it may be 1/8. You can work it through the round access cover. It isn't easy, but it can be done. |

| Good info!
Thanks all!
I was getting a bit baffled by it, as running an ohm meter on it it had constant contiuity (despite moving all sorts of things) with the motor off (have it all torn town so running test was not an option). Ill check it out when running to see if the pressure switch is working, if so, Ill integrate into the wiring Im doing and make er work. If it doesnt appear to work, then Ill wait for the manuals to see what the story is with it (ie replacement)
The Nuetral/Start safety wire... guessing the switch is toast... no continuity on that wire to ground at any time irrelevant of SoS position etc... And not all that interested in pulling the top cover off with the cables through it just to investigate. If I get super itchy about a saftey - Ill run a limit switch off the clutch or something. Unless others have a good reason why I should get in there and fix the original stuff.
Once I get it all re-wired and stuff assembled, Ill hopefully have the books on hand and can learn what plugs are what oil, and what dipsticks are for what levels... and make sure all the oil is good and levels up to par.
Thanks again! Now I can at least get to wiring things and know what to do with those couple wires (ie ignore one and make a provision in the light for the other)

The lights on the dash: left side - generator tellite; right side - transmission lube pressure tellite:
The others are partially correct on the transmission tellite but not totally.
Ford did not stop using this light after 62, although it's incorporation into the dash of SOS tractors appears to be some what random. I have an early 63 that neither has the light nor a hole in the dash where it would be. I have two 64s that both have the light.
The tractor will not stop moving before the light illuminates. This is a lube circuit pressure light. Normal pressure in the lube circuit is 15 psi. The lube tellite lights at anything below 2 psi. Its switch is inside the center housing on the transmission tailshaft housing. It is normally closed and opens at 2 psi.
The dipstick does not check differential fluid level. It checks fluid in the hydraulic reservoir only. The transmission and differential have pipe plugs to check their levels. |

| From what others have said, I gather that the lubrication pressure switch runs an idiot light that warns you if the S-O-S hydraulic pressure is so low that it can't even lubricate the transmission, much less run the darn tractor. The idiot light only goes off somewhere down in the 2 to 4psi range. If your transmission pressure is that low, then you've probably already noticed that something is wrong because the transmission wouldn't be able to make the tractor move long before the pressure got low enough to trigger the warning light. I guess that's why they stopped including it in the later models. |

| | I do not have a wiring diagram, nor does my IT manual oddly enough. However I was able to determin in a quick reading on the SOS trans section that the wires you speak of are in fact; "First wire goes into the top plate on the SoS trans next to where the shift cable goes in" - You are correct, Start Safety Switch. "The second wire goes along the trans and enters the case on the left side in the plate that has the oil dipstick" - is a Lubrication Pressure Switch. It appears it was used on 59 - 62 models and does not appear to have been used later. This manual does not describe it any further. |
